p.1 #1Which composition do you prefer?
I tried it three different ways thinking I’d be able to pick when I got home. I am not sure which composition works better?

Handheld and walking around. Spotted this fishing trawler.

Out of the three you posted I would choose the first one.

Not actually knowing what the importance of everything is to the photo and you, I have offered a possible fourth choice. You mentioned the fishing trawler, so I am thinking that is why you took the photo.

p.1 #3Which composition do you prefer?
I like the first composition best, where the fishing boat (the primary visual anchor) has more space to navigate to.

It might be worth cropping some of the water or some of the sky, (depending on which one you want to prioritize) IOT avoid splitting the image horizontally into two equal parts and creating this way a more dynamic composition. The horizon placed in the middle of the frame makes an image feel static (except for reflections).

As in the example below, by cropping the water you prioritize the sky, making it more prominent. It also brings more focus to the interaction between the buoys and the distant boat, to my eyes.

Another smaller issue you may also want to consider is cloning (or crop out) the two vans at the edge of the left frame as they might interfere with the calm, expansive view of a coastal inlet. The presence of the two people works as they give a sense of proportions.

You did a very good job managing the vast amount of the open scene.

p.1 #5Which composition do you prefer?
I just enjoy bringing my camera along when I go for morning walks or explore somewhere new. The California coast is always a great place to take pictures. I keep it pretty simple and usually just bring one lens, either my 35mm or 50mm. I like sticking to my favorite focal lengths, taking pictures, and just enjoying the moment.

Perhaps more like this framing?

I prefer the first composition. The second and third are too cropped for my liking and appear more panoramic. I think what makes the first picture for me is the amount of empty space among the water and sky above. It's a nice scene and photo.

It's an easy choice for me, the first one! It is the cleanest and most calming composition of those presented.

Find something interesting to put in the foreground. A different place to stand would might have yielded a foreground element to help.

It doesn't seem like there's much of interest beyond the boat in grandmas crop, which would have been better a few seconds earlier before it went beyond the jetty on the right.
