p.1 #1 · Sony A7R IV — 190MP Images with Medium-Format Depth of Field

I’ve recently completed a fairly extensive test using the Sony A7R IV with an SMC Pentax-FA 645 33–55mm F4.5 AL medium-format zoom and a Fotodiox TLT ROKR adapter.

I posted the main technical discussion in the Leica & Alternative Gear forum because the setup is fundamentally an adapted medium-format lens combination, but I thought there were two aspects in particular that might be of interest to Sony users.

The first is resolution.

Using the A7R IV’s 60.2MP sensor together with the oversized Pentax 645 image circle and lateral shift, it is possible to capture multiple overlapping frames and stitch them into files exceeding 190MP — without changing camera position or rotating the camera between exposures.

The second is rendering.

Because the lens was designed for the larger 645 format, the combination allows the A7R IV to exploit a much larger image circle than a conventional full-frame lens. By shifting and stitching, the final image can approach the field-of-view and depth-of-field characteristics associated with a larger capture format, while retaining the flexibility of the Sony body.

The adapter also adds up to 16mm of shift, tilt and rotation, so the same setup can be used for conventional perspective control as well as compositional movements, panoramic stitching and focus-plane manipulation.

For anyone interested in the full test, including the 190MP examples and the medium-format emulation section, the main discussion is here:

The video itself is also linked in that thread.

How is this any different than the Brenizer method other than lack of convenience?

I think the OP is using shift-stitching as compared to pan-stitching if I understand what the Branzino did.
Around 2015-2016 I did a lot of shift-stitching with the Canon 24TSE II on the 50MP 5DsR. Three shots gives you 100MP and an ellipse gives you quite a bit more, but I forget the number. Shift-stitching is great when you are in a space where panning creates strong perspective issues.
At close distance you need to slide around the lens if you don't have a shift lens with a tripod mount or a larger format lens adapter with a tripod mount.

I hadn't thought about perspective. Back in the day I did a lot of pan stitching, I was in love with the 6x12 ratio, but with the amount of megapixels already present in these cameras, my personal body is a A7rIV, I couldn't see the need any more when a good lens and a crop was sufficient even for large prints. I do remember that using shift stitching for wide shots at the time required having the lens mounted to the tripod and shifting the camera, I'm not sure if modern shifting software requires this.
