I've owned the a7CII as well as the a7RV, so I know both sensors.

First of all, given where these units are in the product cycle, I would suggest buying the (at least) used, or a special Sony sale.

Secondly, I tried living with the a7CII as my one and only camera, and that didn't work for me at all. EVF is too small and dark, lack of customizable buttons, it was actually too small for my hands and felt cramped, the mechanical shutter, single SD card slot, etc, etc, etc. The senor readout speed on both the a7CII and a7CR are

Thats exactly what it would be - a fun family travel camera, not my main one. I would only use during our trips so would be light with one small zoom and maybe one bright prime. Then during the year, if I felt like I want to go light, I would maybe throw 24G or 40G on it and go out with it in my pocket (coat pocket.

Without being specific to these two cameras — neither of which I own — let me address the MP question itself.

The two biggest reasons we hear for wanting the higher MP sensors are:

1. Potentially greater detail in highly magnified presentations of the photographs. (To me that means quite large prints, say 20” x 30” and larger.)

2. Potential to crop into the image more while maintaining sufficient pixel dimensions.

Regarding #1, it is useful to ask yourself how large you are typically going to make your prints or screen displays. If you are going to make very large prints (and you

Thanks for your input. Yep, I understand MP reasons behind it all - this is exactly why I wanted to ask you guys about your own use case.

I checked my photos folder - I have 49K photos from last 20 years or so.
How many times I cropped? Maybe 5 times.
How many times I edited a photo in post process? maybe 10 times. I shoot and keep SOOC.

So yes, 60MP would be only for moments when I pull camera up to my eye and find that Iw ould use a zoom, so would switch to APSC to frame cropped. Probably 90% of the time I would crop while framing, I don't really do PP, so wouldn't want to leave it till then, maybe sometimes I would take a shot planning that when i come back home from our trip, I would get things closer in post to get the wanted frame.

How many pixels do you really need? What are you doing with your photos? 60 or 100 megapixels sounds great until you realize you need bigger, faster memory cards and bigger, faster computer hardware to handle the files.

A 50% crop of 33mp fills a 4K display. That's enough to print 17 inches wide at 200dpi. If you're cropping more than 1/2 your image, you should probably be using a longer lens or working on your composition in camera.

Thanks, yep, this gives me some perspective.

I do not print my photos (maybe will in the future, or my grandkids will).
I view my photos on 4K screen (42inch, 65inch, 75inch).
Feels like 33MP should still be fine, perfect for regular photos, then good enough for crop if I had to, as I mentioned bfore, VERY occasionally.

The CII has morre AF points, larger photo sites, and a somewhat faster readout. That gives you slightly better AF, slightly better noise at high ISO, and slighltly more resistance to rolling shutter artifacts. None of these differences are at the level of a game-changer, but they are there as slight advantages. The CR takes those away and gives you much more resolution, whch can let you crop more (if you actually do that to an extreme degree) or make larger prints. Bear in mind also that maximizing resolution requires very good technique and happens best in good light.

All this

Thanks. Yes, I would not pay full price on new body.
I'm buying new, but from grey market shop, so new imported.

If you’re asking, save money vs buying a camera that someone else values for reasons that don’t matter to you. I say this because without any external feedback, you knew everything offered in this thread. If you don’t know, then that also supports the suggestion that you save money. Now, find lenses that you value for how you shoot and what you shoot.

BTW: The A6700 with APSc lenses is even smaller and quite capable.

Yes, agreed. I wanted to see you guys opinions, but I knew that 90% here will be pros or very high level enthusiasts, so I would here take 60MP in most responses
For me 60MP is higher/highest level of IQ I can have (skipping medium format), with all bells and whistles, so you guys would suggest to get full body size R, or that small 7Cr for all reasons that matter to you guys.
I knew its gonna be that way, but wanted to get a confirmation from just a few of you that will suggest to take 7cii just wanted to see if they will mention same reasons I have in my head
Or, listen and take 60MP in case I would hear something I don't know that would be a huge advantage. But this did not happen.

Yep, this is the thing - there is always a fear of spending money on something that won't fit, or simply wont be fully used.
I'm always cautious when buying bodies, plus cautious when listening/reading advices on forums
I alwys try and take as much as possible from all suggestions and opinions, especially looking at who gives them.
When I see some apparently a pro photographer ehre, telling me that 7cR would be better and seeign he uses cameras as his job, shooting lots of sessions, post processing for hours to get best results, crop, print large or do this all for customers - I know that I'm exactly opposit and wont be doing all this, so need to carefully take under consideration what he's telling me and see if his suggestions will find reflection in my use case.

Thank you all for your suggestions and opinions.

As mentioned above, I wanted to see your opinions, but I knew that it will come from a lot more experienced and involved photographers than me.

I would say that 90% of you said to take a7cR, as higher res will be more useful.
Also, straight away I know exactly what you all meant, where this extra res would be useful.
I thought through all my use case, what I have done in the past and what will do in the future, where and how this camera would eb used.
From super old Zenit TTL (my first ff camera when I was little in 80s), to first Minolta dlsr, compact digital Kodak camera, to my m43 GF1, Olympus, then finally Sony a7ii, a7c, latest Nikon Zf - I always liked the idea of "shrinking" electronic devices. As 95% of the time I use camera, it is my family trip, I know I want something smaller. Also I know what 7cR brings to the table, compared to 33MP version.

Carefully considering both options, I think I will go with a7cii - all your opinions confirmed what I wanted to confirm - all reasons why to pick 60MP are valid, but for your use case. I feel like during my trips those moments where I will feel like I could use 120mm lens or longer, going to be very rare. So main reason why I looked into this is practically answered. Then all other advantages (as I would say a7cR has only advantages, nothign really negative when we are looking ONLY at those two models) would have almost no influence on me use-case.

I know shorfalls of using such a compact body, I had a7c in the past, evf was a bit small, screen wasn;t that great either. Now I had Zf, so evf was like 0.6x to 0.8x compared. Getting a7cii with 0.7x will be exactly in the middle, so making it batter, but not so much as Zf. For me bigger improvement will be that grip. a7c had terrible smooth, slippery grip material, they fixed it bringing grip texture from a7 series, plus a bit bigger, better form/shape. That higher res of 33PM, will let me crop to around 15MP, IF I will need it.
In the future I may go back to Nikon Zf, maybe they will release Zfii in a year or so,w ith higher res sensor etc - I loved the vintage look of it, but weight of the body with any of Nikon lens was killing me (Jesus Christ Nikon, can you make your lens a bit lighter and smaller?). I think a7cii will be my travel camera, but at home I may get Zf again in the future, jsut for manual Voigtlanders or some other use - purely for estetics and tactile pleasure

So next year, when I'm going to visit Machu Picchu, I will stand on that hill, bring my a7cii to my eye and realise - shit, guys were right, that 20-60mm is not enough I could have had a7cr now and crop it - I'll "penitently" ask my missus to slap me for making that decision (joking aside, I will have to get some 20-200mm Sigma or something long for this kind of trip I guess )

I went for the a7c2 over the a7cr because I didn't want or need the higher resolution and the premier cost. The one thing I didn't like about the c2 was the faster shutter limitation since I like to shoot wide open. But it hasn't been much of an issue for me.

Sometimes it takes using the gear for a while to see if things are working as expected.

The body choice will likely be obvious to you as right or wrong fairly quickly. Maybe set up some tests locally to see how long you might need to go for focal length and crop. I'd want to figure that out at home, of course. I don't know Machu Pichu but regularly go past 70mm and out to 200mm fairly often in "travel" situations.
