November 1st already... crazy!
I thought I would share some 100% zooms of the shots I've recently captured with and without the 1.4x on the 600 F/6.3. There's a lot of going back and forth one which lens should you buy and if one is a better investment than the other, rightfully so as these are not cheap lenses and deserve scurtiny.
My $.02 and take if for just that If your image library shows you shooting at 600mm + the majority of the time, give the 600 a shot. I can tell you without hesitation the 1.4x (at least my combo) doesn't show image degradation that is noticeable, at least to me. Be sure to click on the Flickr link as it has the entire screen shot at 100%. I've found the AF to be plenty responsive with the 1.4x on as well. The bare lens, well.. wicked sharp.
I'm still on the fence about buying the 400/4.5 as it was going to be my hummingbird lens to replace the 100-400 I recently sold. After shooting with the TC on the 600, I'm thinking of saving the $ for something else. I currently own the 300 f/2.8 (it's for sale) and the difference at 600mm with the 2x on it vs the bare 600, slight edge to the 600, very slight. I don't have a need for the 300 at f/2.8 at 99% of the time, nice to have, not needed.
Again, have a look at all the shots you've taken over the past year or so, it's what helped me land on the 600 vs the 400 to start.
If you have any question about the lens, happy to discuss. It's a 10/10 in my book for what it is and how I use it.

More Snowies. Interesting fishing technique observed, egrets were jumping out over the water and snatching fish while still on the wing. Multiple egrets were doing the same thing.

Another Snowy sequence, should have probably been higher shutter speed, it was tough getting the action sharp and in focus but just managed it. This was around 8am and mostly overcast conditions. Focus would lose the eye when the wings would flap and cover it, pretty quick though.

Looks like you had a fun day out, nice captures.

Thanks, it was a great! I was out 4 hours yesterday and 3 hours this morning. Being outside with the 600 6.3 is easy breezy, almost feels like an extension of you, you don't carry the lens, you become one with the lens you wear it like a glove.
If the glove fit the 600 won't quit.

We had rain all day, no chance of taking the lens out. Glad you enjoyed the day The lens is fun to shoot with, no doubt.
