Amazing photos on this thread. I’m very disappointed to be so invested into Canon right now. These telephoto offerings from Sony are amazing travel companions and the only good thing Canon has is the 100-500L.

I just sold my Canon gear to move to Sony. It was hard to give up the 600/4, 100-500, and R5 II, but for me the 600 6.3 was worth the switch.

Anyone care to guess which is which between the 300/2x and the 600? These are at 200% in LR.
I would say the left is the 600f6.3 on both
On the ducks, not sure if you mixed the order on each pair, but the right appears sharper on the first pair. And the left on the second. I’m gonna say those are the bare lens

You are correct for the 300 vs 600 comparison.
You are correct that the pintails are not in the same order and I'd agree the right is sharpest on the first and left on the second.
However, those two sharper shots are the lens with the 1.4TC.
So it seems we can pull some more detail out of a 1.4TC shot.
For that comparison the 840 shot is zoomed to 100% and the 600 shot is 140%.
This afternoon I did more controlled tests between the 300GM, 600/6.3, 600/4 and 100-400/4.5 at the 560/600 and 800/840 focal lengths. I will download and look at those later.

I think the 600/6.3 is a great option for photographers who have an issue hand holding the 600/4. Definitely invest in a 600/6.3 the day I can't hold up a 600/4 for 10 minute stretch waiting for a perched bird to take off.
Yes, but with the 600/6.3 one can hold the camera/lens up to their eye with one hand and browse FM forums on their phone with the other at the same time
Next time we shoot together I'm breaking out the stopwatch to see this 10min stretch up to the eye in real time.

Ah…I see
Good to know that the 1.4x does provide some advantage over just cropping. And that diffraction isn’t coming into play just yet
Looking forward to hearing what you make of the controlled tests you did!

Here are a couple 600 vs 840....
The color rendition isn't identical; I can't tell the two photos apart on my smartphone 😅
In your opinion, is the 300mm f/2.8 with a 2x teleconverter better than the 600mm f/6.3?
I’m considering trading in my 300mm f/2.8 for a combination of the 600mm f/6.3 and the 400mm f/4.5.
Using a 1.4x teleconverter on my 400mm f/4.5 yields results on par with my 300mm f/2.8 at 600mm f/5.6.
However, I find the success rate for birds in flight to be much less consistent, and the images are less detailed compared to a cropped shot from the 400mm.

FYI: I had a contact problem with 1.4TC and 200-600.
I cleaned, cleaned again, cleaned again with swabs and alcohol.
Finally, I used an eraser instead. Success.
No further problems for next 2 years or so.
I had avoided the eraser due to predictable rubber 'crumbs' making a mess but it was very easy to clean up with a rocket blower.

Probably wasn't a good day to try the 1.4x since it was mostly overcast. Camera keeps "blacking out" when turning on like this: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1936686/0#17118929
Have to take out the battery or disconnect camera from lens to reset it. Seems to only happen with 1.4x on, I cleaned the contacts so i dunno. Maybe its just not lined up well with my 600 6.3 and maybe I need to try another 1.4x. The duckies were far away, 840 still wasn't enough haha. There were a few on the near side of the pond but they took off when they saw me. I got low and hid in the bushes for 45min to see if any floated closer, some did but still far. Almost seems like i'm shooting through a "cloud" with 1.4x but 600 is crystal clear. Ill keep trying this 1.4x, one of these days i'll get it and fix my user error or try another 1.4x or just give up 1.4x totally lol.
