I'm seeing a lot of these accounts on FM that are newly created with fake profile info and then instantly used to post messages that are superficial, nonsequitur, or entirely blank. Perhaps this is the way of the Net these days, with vandals and AI agents running amok. In the fashion of the Ignore List, I suggest a filtering facility per FMer where messages from fresh accounts can be supressed until the account reaches some stage of maturity (week, month, year).

IMO, it's going to get worse, before it gets better.

Spammers are one of the reasons that forums are shutting down all over.
However, the process of becoming a legitimate new member cannot become too unreasonable or they won't get any new membership and the site will die off.

And just to confirm the situation, I asked AI about the use of AI to spam forums. My particular question was so commonly asked that it auto-completed!

Rico: Are AI bots being used to post on reddit?
Google AI: Yes, AI bots are widely used to post and comment on Reddit.

You can submit the question yourself to Google and see the full lowdown. Executive summary: we have entered the next stage of civilization's complete collapse. No human need for social media when AI can take care of both sides of the conversation.

I don't need AI to talk to myself. I'm pretty sure even troglodytes were doing that.

It was happening on many sites before bots were doing it. Humans were hired by many companies to post fake reviews of their products.

We maintain rigorous spam control, but some falling through the cracks is inevitable, just like on major social media sites.

Bots spamming forums is literally a decades-old problem. All "AI" does is enable the potential for conversational text and defeating more anti-automation tests.

Well, for sure. I was an early participant of Unix News (later Usenet), having set up the first corporate UUCP node in 1979. In due course, the academic and cloistered environment of Usenet expanded in scope and was infiltrated by nefarious players with profit-making intentions. Thread-spamming became a widespread war involving filters on news readers, excommunicated nodes, and moderator activities.

The current problem with AI is trying to filter, or even detect, spammers. FM is a moderated forum but AI is now able to pass the Turing Test. The effect of AI is pollution of conversations between the (presumably) human participants. If the pollution is bad enough, people will simply leave as happened to Usenet. Here's a sample FM thread where the AI started the thread and participated in detail:

I use AI for work and for personal uses. The AI powered recommendation system for Apple Music is invaluable for exploring new genres and artists. What is not acceptable to me is communicating with, or being entertained by, AI slop—unless I request it explicitly for some reason.

A nice read on the topic of AI that goes back a few centuries and millennia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test

Quote from that article:

Social Turing game: Taking advantage of large language models, in 2023 the research company AI21 Labs created an online social experiment titled "Human or Not?" It was played more than 10 million times by more than 2 million people. It is the biggest Turing-style experiment to that date. The results showed that 32% of people could not distinguish between humans and machines.

One can argue that a pillar of philosophy is the question of what it means to be human. Thanks to current AI achievements, I don't think I'm going to like the answer. Next step: Skynet.

What is the purpose, if not spamming is it just to shut down the forums?
