Any MacOS 2i7 Issues?

p.1 #1Any MacOS 2i7 Issues?
I figured I might as well start this thread now that the newest MacOS version is out for real.

MacOS upgrades are usually relatively problem free, but there are always glitches... and since I've been caught by them a few times in the (distant) past I usually wait to see if problems emerge before I update. I have updated one file server machine with no problems so far... but I prefer to hold off on my Photoshop-centric desktop for at lats a bit.

So, any issues yet?

(BTW, I'm thinking of actual technical and compatibility issues rather than the usual "I like the old icons better" stuff.:-)

I think I'm going to stick with the current version of MacOS until they force me to update. Not really all that excited about AI. Sorry if that's not what you were looking for, but I'll keep an eye out for any issues reported.

I am also likely to wait at least a while, though not until a .2 version. Typically most meaningful issues are solved by the first update.

In any case, my hope is that this thread can be a place to collect relevant information as more people do the update.

Photoshop desperately needs a patch. I'm getting really odd crashes doing the same things I have always done.

The OS itself is fine, lots of QoL improvements over 26.

I loaded macOS 27 on my laptop a few days back, but not my desktop. So far haven't encountered major issues with the OS or with LRC v15.5.1. But I haven't pushed it too hard yet. The were some online reports of LRC crashing but I haven't experienced that...yet. *Both my laptop and desktop are M1 Macs.

I almost always wait simply to allow time for the software I use to catch up.

Specific question: Has anyone done any printing to an Epson printer from Photoshop yet? (You get bonus points if your printer is a P9000. ;-)

p.1 #9Any MacOS 2i7 Issues?
There’s reportedly a serious bug in Software Update which causes the auto downloader to go into a hard loop, consuming an entire core. Apparently it dark-wakes the machine at midnight and keeps at it until 9am, local time. The workaround is to turn off automatic downloads and updates in the Software Update settings panel. I always do anyway, since I don’t want it unexpectedly swamping my local wifi. I don’t know whether the 27.0.1 update that came out this morning fixes this. You’d hope so, since it will silently flatten the battery overnight on a sleeping laptop.

A couple of times I’ve seen those toggle switches in Settings not correctly update to reflect the state. Close the panel and come back and they’re correct again.

Software building is most of what I’ve been doing with it, and I’ve encountered a couple of minor problems. Terminal hung a couple of times when it had the focus after a Fast User Switch, cleared with ^c. The GUI to Apple’s Xcode software development environment appears to have been completely rewritten (for the better) but in the process they ruined the xed command – it now creates one dummy project with numerous files and folders for each file so edited. But, generally, very good.

I have nothing to say about photo software yet.

If everyone holds back on the update, then the incentive on the software providers to check and, if necessary, update their software is reduced. The reason that Apple made the OS free was to reduce updating friction. I have several Apple machines and have had no issues with mainstream software or even printing. This stuff has been out for public testing since June. It’s not like getting the new release of Windows on floppies or CDs for the first time.

Fortunately not “everyone hold back on the upate.” Some of us, though, have learned the hard way that the small inconvenience of waiting a little bit outweighs the occasional disasters we’ve lived through… and we’re happy to let others take the first plunge :-)

I will say that the lack of any obvious reports of problems related to photography stuff is encouraging.

It definitely depends on your policy and business model. I tend to delay updates other than for critical CVEs or functional defects. Even if the OS update is not a problem in itself, there may be application incompatibilites that take time to resolve. MS 365, Adobe, etc. may be quick to update, but smaller vendors less so.

Unfortunately Apple has not been selective enough about who can be a beta tester, and genuine properly-described bug reports are apparently being lost in the noise of incorrect and poorly written ones. If you look in the right places it’s not uncommon to see comments like “I reported that in the beta but they released it with the bug still there”.

I mentioned a couple of bugs I found in Golden Gate in my earlier post, and have since found a couple more (which I think won’t be of interest to most people here). They’re there.

Normally I would wait until 27.1 but this is a new machine which can’t run anything older than 27.0. I have neither the physical space nor the backup media to keep both the new old machines live, and I’ve been editing files on the new machine, so the rest of the files (just personal stuff like finance and emails now) has to be moved before the next backup runs.

Capture One 16.8.6.25 is working for me.

Affinity Photo 2.6.5 (the last version from Serif) is working for me. I did not test its raw conversion.

I have not tested tethering or printing.

Just received my preorder, 4 days now, new Big Mac, 256GB M5 Ultra Studio.
It had 27.0 on it, I updated to 27.1
No real issues so far, except STILL setting up/tweaking this, man how I hate this part.
Have not installed everything as on my ol' mini mac, 64GB M4 Mac Mini Pro.
Wondering if I can install all the commercial software I have on two stations?
Maybe move them from mini mac to Big Mac, that should work...
I see I need to buy another TB5 dock, and ext nvme/ssd drives, sigh...

Gotta say though, new station is a BEAST.
It is killing ComfyUI run times compared to mini mac.

Oh, mini mac stays as it is, Sequoia 15.8.1

p.1 #16Any MacOS 2i7 Issues?
I have the new machine running Golden Gate set up in its final location with both Apple Studio Display monitors connected now, so I can say something about Mission Control, which many claim to be broken.

(Mission Control + Spaces is macOS’s implementation of virtual desktops, with trackpad gestures, keyboard shortcuts and mouse buttons allowing a “bird’s eye” view of all your windows and virtual desktops.)

First of all, it was clear even before testing that many complainers weren’t following the instructions (which can be found in the Tips app in a subsection under “Apps”) but simply using whatever mouse actions happened to work in earlier versions. And in the week I was using it with a single monitor, with a single virtual desktop, and never using tiling or any apps in full screen mode, it worked perfectly.

I don’t use tiling, and put an app into full screen mode maybe once a year, so I didn’t test those. They have both been complained about.

My second Studio Display is normally powered down, and I power it up (via an IKEA remote socket) when I want to use it. Sequoia used to have trouble with this, blanking the main display, confusing apps and sometimes screwing up its settings; this problem is gone in Golden Gate. I chose to add the second monitor to the Goden Gate machine by powering it up after booting, and when I did that the menu and wallpaper showed correctly but I couldn’t move the mouse pointer onto this second display. I cleared this by rearranging the monitors in the Displays panel of Settings so the left monitor was on the left and the right one on the right in the panel. Obviously, that ran some initialisation code which should have been called when a second monitor was first detected, but hadn’t been. If I had to guess, whoever tested this at Apple is right-handed like me and had the secondary monitor on the left, so always did this drag at the start of testing! Certainly it’s a bug, but that’s the workaround. Once done once, the second monitor can come and go without problems, and the configuration survives a reboot.

I normally have two or three virtual desktops (“Spaces”) set up with the secondary monitor set to be a separate Space so I can move the Dock there if I want. This is all working as expected.

There is another bug assigning an app to a Space using the context menu of its Dock icon. This just doesn’t work at all in Golden Gate – it starts on the wrong monitor. The menu is also buggy: both the chosen desktop and “None” are selected! Eventually, I got it back to the initial state where “None” is selected and the app always started on the main monitor. The menu is different with only one monitor, and maybe that works. This feature also didn’t work sometimes on Sequoia, so I suppose Golden Gate is a step forward in that it consistently never works. I’ve just decided not to use the feature.

So, there are bugs in Mission Control, but once I worked around those it’s working better for me than it did on Sequoia, with the caveat that I’m treading a “happy path” in the way I use it.
