What if? What if Fuji would turn the X-Pro line into OVF only? Would that fly? I mean, there are many voices advocating a camera with OVF. Of course, the current OVF is really only useful with 23/27/35mm lenses. What about wider or longer lenses? Well, the answer could be an add on EVF such as the one for the Sony NEX line or Canon G1X MkII (or Leica). All very decent. This would give a place for the X-E line and the X-Pro line. Keep X-Pro to photography only, no video. 26MP, no IBIS.

Only if you put a rangefinder in it for focussing.
Oh, wait, been done before......

No, that is the point. No Leica style rangefinder. That would require a whole line of new lenses, also. One will need to rely on the focus system of the camera - just like now with the current X-Pro line.

No, you have the patch in the corner, or evf at a flick of a switch, to check focus.
Have you nothing better to do than try for 'most threads on the same subject started' award?

That patch would be okay, but a purist version would allow focus check only on the LCD. In Fuji AF we trust. No need to check :-)
Can you point me to those other threads. My search didn't turn up any. If you think that musing about such a version is a waste of time - then please, don't bother.
think it could work, but I’d keep the hybrid finder. The OVF is really the defining feature of the X-Pro, but making it OVF-only would limit the camera pretty heavily once you move beyond the 23/27/35mm range

I agree, it would limit the use - unless you use a really good add-on EVF for other focal lengths. Leica does it (of course at the cost of an arm and a leg).

How many threads do we need about this? This couldn't go in one of the 5 current ones?
Should be taken seriously as can be seen also from this discussion. Easy to see how important hybrid viewfinder has been to Fujifilm a digital camera brand.
Kind of funny. I do not personally know anybody using X100 mostly with OVF. Even Leica started transitioning from OVF to EVF.

Leicahave had OVF cameras for years, TL, CL, SL. Nobody else has done the hybrid finder like the Xpro.

A hybrid VF is always a compromise. Neither the best possible EVF nor the best possible OVF. When the X100 was introduced, EVF in general were a far cry from what we have today. So the OVF hybrid with a fixed 35mm FF equiv lens made sense.
The X100VII could be the first camera with an OVF only. One focal length that perfectly fits the OVF. Frames to show crop mode. Of course, such an OVF camera would demand a reliable, consistent AF.

The Xpro2 duaĺ mag OVF is very good, gives good coverage of the focal lengths it covers, better than the Leica 0.62x finder found in most if the Ms, where 28 is barely visible especially if the user has glasses, and even 90 is quite small.
But it's EVF leaves a lot to be desired by modern standards.

Yes, the X-Pro OVF supported more focal lenghts. But I guess it was also a lot more complicated and expensive to manufacture - so Fuji ditched it. There is now one module that fits the X100 and the X-Pro.
An OVF only model could bring back the multi magnification for focal lengths from, say, 16mm to 75mm or 90mm. If it only comes with framelines and no muti magnification, then 50mm is already difficult, as well as anything wider than 23mm. But such a multi magnification OVF probably also is not easy to manufacture and costly.
But what if the next X-Pro with OVF onl would be launched with a Tri-Fujicron that can switch between 23/35 and 50mm? And the OVF would support that with framelines? And for other focal lengths, Fuji would offer an excellent add-on EVF? I could picture such a camera as niche but a statement.

Well if I put my 18-55 on my Xpro2 the frame lines follow the zoom all the way through from 18 to 55, so you can set 38mm if you want. No need for a Tri Fujicron

Of course, that works. But a Tri-Fujicron would or could be better optically? More like three primes? The Tri-Elmar was slow (f4). But with today's tech? And of course such a lens would add to the "Retro" feeling of such a camera.
But the more I think about such an OVF only camera: The X100 line may be better suited than the X-Pro. One lens with multi mag.

Hybrid viewfinder is unique in Fuji, that is true. But it is definitely not Xpro innovation. Hybrid viewfinder was introduced in X100 and was implemented to XPro more than a year later.
Leica can do anything with L-mount and Panasonic compacts but I was freeing to M-mount. M-mount is so deep in the core of the brand that all changes must be done great consideration. The thing with Fuji and hybrid viewfinder is slowly getting similar cult value.

Tri Elmar was forced on Leica by the way its OVF works. The Fuji one is totally different, presumably electronically generated, and has the advantage of working with adapted lenses of focal lengths not suplied by Fuji, I have 21, 24 and 40 all work, and also with the focal lengths achieved by my focal reducer. I doubt a Tri focal length lens would be better than a good zoom, principles and limitations much the same, a pointless exercise for Fuji.
What would be good is a zoom OVF constant size frame lines but the magnification zooms. Canon r/f cameras had a zoom finder, although no bright line frames, and I have at least two zoom external multifinders from film days.
