The first 3 were taken while hiking in light rain. The first two were taken with as verticals with my 500mm both because of the vastness of the area. The third is at 70mm allowing me to use the moderately long lens to add some foreground to the distant mountain. The last image is one that I had to take yet in a very scary spot to shoot as it was on a very curvy part of the road and I saw it every time I was driving out of the park. I had noted two pull outs one above the photo location and the other below yet they were both tiny and I worried about getting out of the car on the curve. I asked the Shuttle Bus driver if there was a trail near that location and he said no, the best bet was to go to the lower pullout and walk back up and then carefully run into the middle of the road to take the photo. I chose to climb the hill on the side of the road rather stand in the middle of it as I like to take my time composing. My schedule and the train schedule did not align so the tressel is empty.

Love the composition in #2 and colors in #4.
Several times driving through AZ/UT/NM I've been tempted to photograph from the middle of the road, but like you, mostly opt not to.
