p.1 #1EF 40mm STM …. Becoming a cult lens?
As per title
Of all the lenses I own
By far my most used is the 40stm (and 24stm) mainly due to their pancake size.
I originally had 3 copies (2 black 1 white) gave one to a friend.
I’ve been on the lookout to replace the one I gave away (the white one is part of the white SL1 kit along with white 18-55, shutter count 209, all boxed and pristine)
For the past few months I’ve seen the prices slowly rising I just assumed it was a trend - maybe a YouTube video had spiked interest??

But it now appears the 40 is fast becoming a cult lens, used prices are sky rocketing. Saw one yesterday, no box listed a £208!!

My copy seems fine, sadly seems to have a fair bit of dust inside and the paint is wearing away but optically it still performs well.

Think I’ll just have to bite the bullet and pay the inflated prices… pretty galling as I paid nothing like this for the one’s I have.

Anyone else noticed the price increase?

Edit..
Just checked prices again.. one has been listed at £328!!! 😳

Crazy times

Maybe locally near you? Right now I can walk in to a second hand section of the Prague's largest camera shop (so it would be most expensive) and have 40STM for about £144...

Edit: pretty much ordinary price (4200CZK) I've been seeing in that shop (and others) for years.

People list crazy prices on ebay all day long.

Look at "SOLD" listings to get the real street price.

The 40mm is a great lens, I use it on my GFX50R, covers the sensor quite well.

MPB has a ton of them available to ship right now in the UK, with prices ranging from £169 for a like new copy to £133 for a 'good' one with some flaws. Most are in the £155 range. (they also have tons of white ones, which are really rare in the US, but perhaps more plentiful in the UK.

https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/canon-ef-40mm-f-2-8-stm

And those come with a full 1 year warranty! (we only get 6 months from MPB in the US).

I stumbled onto a Canon macro lens I had NEVER heard of and I have been shooting Canon all my life, The EF-S35mm Macro f2.8 IS STM. Has a built in "ring flash" also.

I LOVE it!!!

Try keh.com..I checked and they DO have 1 for sale. Black. 6 month warranty. I have purchased from them and each item exceeded my expectations in quality.

Tom found it 1st!

I tend NOT to "bother" with Amazon Jim BUT...if I did I would do for this reason:
I have NEVER had a problem just asking to return an item because I didn't like it since I became a Prime member years ago. They send me a "Return label" and never an issue.. As soon as I return it at the "UPS Store"..I get a credit on my cc.That's what I like!

Ebay? I have been a member since the mid 1990's..While I have never had an issue with anything I bought there, items in photography..I will look but no buy.
I have found the same item I am looking for on a photo dealer's website anyway. Yeah a few denaro more maybe but I have "peace of mind".

Just fyi...as a buyer....and a "capitalist".

I have bought several FD to R & FD to Fuji X adapters for $14 from amazon, and they work fine. I did buy the Meike 85 1.8 SE II lens for EF, for $190. and it's a very good lens.

For adapters, batteries and 3rd party sundries etc etc then amazon is my default first port of call. But big ticket items like cameras or lenses are way overpriced on that platform…way overpriced !!

I saved $40 by getting this lens from Amazon, rather then B & H. There are some deals better on Amazon, you just have to look for them

Oh I agree Jim! I have bought many accys for all my cameras but bodies/lenses?...I tend to stay with camera dealers but like I mentioned...Amazon has NEVER "hassled" me about returning anything for any reason.
The accys are usually here by the time I wake up the next day.

I wanted to like this lens (EF-s 24mm f2.8) but have never really warmed to it. I also notice the soft touch rubber coating on mine has flaked away, even though I've only used it like four times in its lifetime and its spent most of it in drawer.

This lens is a real "diamond in the rough"! Uncanny sharpness...love the built in ring flash and "IS". Fits in the palm of my hand.
Thanks mate!
