p.1 #1 · Beware macOS Sequoia 15.8 if you browse raw files

I have seen reports in multiple places that there’s a fairly disastrous bug in the latest (at time of posting) security patch to macOS Sequoia which affects photographers particularly.

There’s a hang in the bundled raw converters. This means:

• Finder will hang in gallery mode if it encounters raws such as .CR3 and .NEF files.

• Finder can’t show thumbnails (strangely, it shows the first one and placeholders for the rest).

• Possible problems with Affinity if using Apple’s raw converters. Workaround: use Serif’s.

• Possible problems with Preview. Workaround: use your raw conversion software (control-click “Open in...”).

I’m not going to test this too hard on my system as it will be retired next week when I have a new Mac arriving, and most of my use of it in the next few days will be migrating non-photographic software off it. I did verify the thumbnails thing, which didn’t seem to be consuming CPU. I’m putting it here for what it’s worth.

Reports are it is not present in Tahoe or Golden Gate. Reports also are that Golden Gate is pretty good, so if your system can run that it’s worth considering moving now. The Capture One release from a couple of days ago lists 27.0 as a tested version.
