I've been using Sony bodies for the past couple of months (A1 II & A7CR). I'd like to save a different set of custom button assignments to different camera custom modes (1, 2, or 3). As far as I can tell this is not possible. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong? It seems really weird that there is so much custom configuration but this obvious use case is not possible.

those memories store shooting settings...however the workaround is to save separate camera-setting files. In other dial mode positions such as M you can store up to 10 configurations on the card in Slot 1

No----the a7R VI also cannot store different custom button assignments in its shooting - memory presets.
If you meant the Save/Load settings workaround, that's available on both the a1ii and a7R VI. I believe it saves a width the numbered array of camera conf. but doent link different button layouts to the mode dial positions. Bummer
