It's a very, VERY rare day when I look at the work of the average FMer and think "this person would be better served artistically by moving from Nikon to Sony". Generally speaking, you could replace those two brands with any two brands.

Sony has ALWAYS had the lead on sensor technology, being the company that develops them (and don't come at me with the bullshit about Sony Semi not being Sony proper). That has never stopped their tech from trickling down the market, or even UP the market to 44x33.

The only "native" third party lenses that Sony enjoys (which are crippled by Sony, by the way) are Sigma. Every other major third party is also supporting Z. How much longer do we have to tolerate this stupid, wrong talking point?

You sound upset -

Yea Nikon is the pioneer in 3rd party lens support. I guess lucky for you they lost their lawsuit against it.

People can be annoyed at Nikon- They seem to be asleep at the wheel currently!

Please go into my Flickr library and please tell me what I haven't been able to do or would be able to do better by switching to Sony again.

Well, the good news for all of us Nikon fans is that they’re developing some new firmware! They’re also developing some new cinema lenses!

That said, it’s getting harder and harder to argue against taking a serious look at Sony.

Their lens lineup is simply far more versatile than what Nikon currently offers, especially now that Sony has closed the gap on lightweight telephotos.

Cinema bodies, photo bodies, global shutter sensors, stacked action sensors, stacked high-resolution sensors, non stacked options and a massive selection of third-party lenses.

eh, it's Sony reacting to the market. for anyone already on Nikon they're not going to switch brands for those lenses (i mean i wouldn't). Nikon has periodic sales year round so price-wise they can compete to a certain degree.

to me, the temptation is on the 28-70/2 and 50-150/2 but not enough to reinvest into Sony because i can't with their ergonomics.
i am sure Nikon will have an answer to those lenses...given how fantastic the 24-70 SII and 70-200 SII are.

It looks like Sony is eliminating Nikon's monopoly on smaller, lighter wildlife lenses with their equivalents announced today. I am stunned by how aggressive Sony's pricing is. It makes me wonder if Sony is releasing these as loss leaders to steal wildlife photographers away from Nikon.

Do you foresee Nikon reducing the prices of the Z 400mm f/4.5 ($800 more expensive) and Z 600mm f/6.3 ($1500 more expensive)? I personally think Nikon must drastically reduce their prices if they hope to retain and attract new wildlife shooters.

Not everybody wants to or should shoot on Sony. They're an option. Not the only option.

The proof is in the photos. There is no denying that Sony gear can produce awesome photos. If you're going to leverage some of their unique cameras, like the a9III, a1II or FX5 there is a strong case to make that it could be worth adding Sony to your gear mix or even switching.

But Sony gear also seems to come with what I call rougher edges / more gotchas overall than Nikon. For example third party lens are capped at 15fps AF-C, third party lenses can't use teleconverters, the best AF is locked to 6k+ cameras, more than 10fps for action is also locked behind 6k+ cameras. Even high end lenses like the 100-400mm f4.5 come with some questions, like why do some lenses creep more than others? Where there is overlap, such as the Nikon 24-120mm f4 S vs the Sony 24-105mm f4 G or the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 S II vs the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II, the Nikon lenses often come out on top.

As someone who uses both systems, if it's lenses that are tempting you, I would look into adapting. If it's cameras that are tempting you, the only way you're going to get the best of both worlds is to become a dual system user.

My question every time I see this is the same … what specific gaps are you referencing? What performance are you missing on the Nikon side? What can you shoot on Sony you can’t on Nikon, or at least cannot easily shoot on Nikon? I have a hard time seeing gaps in Nikon’s lens lineup outside of a couple unique offerings. I also have no idea what people think they can do with, e.g., 60 megapixels you can’t do with 45. And, finally, there is not a single circumstance where my Z9 or Z6iii struggles to focus. Users across systems say that Sony or the R1 are stickier. But…sticker than what? My 95%+ accuracy rate? There are no circumstances I am aware of that make me think, “dang, my AF really could stick to my subject better.”

So, I genuinely would like to know what people think they’re missing out on.

I have had several bus and subway ads made with shots from my Z9. Honestly for when I want more rez I just shoot my GFX100 cameras for something bonafide stupid proof. I have been absolutely loving video work with my Z6III and 35 1.2S as well. Sony doesn't even make a native equivalent to that lens and Sony hobbles the third party equivalent as well. So where exactly is the win against that lens on Sony? Yeah I got out of Sony for a reason. The fan hype was definitely part of it.

Totally agree. On the video, I just started shooting this summer, and it really couldn't be easier. Flip a switch, hit a button, and keep the subject in frame -- boom, you have a video! And when shooting slomo, you only have to keep yourself steady for a couple seconds to get something useful!

I think the Z9 and Z8 do 4k120 uncropped. These are very affordable cameras with that feature.

Yeah it's uncropped, but loses the 8k oversampling. In the real world it doesn't matter a bit, it's the best looking slomo I've ever captured.

i'm sorry, what is the problem?

i'm not switching from iOS to Android just because the new Google Pixel comes out with a better camera. Android has a lot more choices, different versions of foldables across different OEMs...i'm still not switching.

So what you are saying is Android is compelling but you don't want to switch?

I Never said there was a problem. I said Sony’s lineup is becoming increasingly compelling. Its cinema, photography, and video portfolio is getting harder and harder to ignore.

I don’t care if you switch systems or stay with Nikon for the rest of your life. That’s completely beside the point.

lol you are trying so hard to rile up the actual Nikon enjoyers and you're failing spectacularly.

I own Nikon- I love their gear- You are just so biased you can't have an actual conversation around it. Thats what this whole thread was about originally! I apologize to all the Nikon apologists here if I offended anyone.

Moving on
