p.1 #1Sigma 85mm f/1.2 DG ART
Minimum focus: 84 cm
Max magnification: 0.11× (1:8.9)
Filter: 82mm
Dimensions, Sony E: 87.2 × 121.7mm
Weigh: 905g
AF motors: Dual HLA linear motors

Summary:
The dual HLA motors and two separate focus groups result in faster autofocus than both the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 and Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2.

It is sharper than the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art across the frame, including at f/1.2.

Compared with the Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM II, the Sigma is sharper in the center of the frame. However, at f/1.4, the GM II is sharper in the mid-frame and corners than the Sigma at f/1.2.

At f/2, the mid-frame performance is roughly equal, but in the corners, the GM II has higher contrast but less microdetail.

At f/2.8, the Sigma 85mm f/1.2 is sharper in the center, mid-frame, and corners.

It sounds like it might arguably be the best 85 f/1.2 regardless of brand. Sigma has been doing a nice job on lenses these days. If you can live with the artificially imposed Sony limitationis (on an 85 f/1.2, I think most can), it is hard to argue with this or many other of their lenses coming to the top of the list.

I think as usual, Dustin's hip-fire sound byte analysis missed the mark in regards to the Z version's AF. Just because it has the dual STM doesn't mean it doesn't have extremely responsive AF. I have Viltrox lenses with "linear" motors that have worse AF than Nikon S lenses with "just" STM.

It should be noted that the first version of the Z 24-70/2.8 S, like the Z 70-200/2.8 VR S, was one of the lenses in the Z range with the fastest autofocus.
The Z 70-200/2.8 VR S in particular is definitely faster in AF than lenses such as the Z 85/1.2 S, or Z 135/1.8 S Plena and Co., where the AF is tailored to specific application scenarios, with high precision in fine adjustment and not, as with the 70-200/2.8, to sports and action-heavy AF scenarios.

Nikon officially states that the SSVCM-based 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II has approximately 3.5× faster AF than the original SSM-based 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, and we know that the 70-200 S v1 is "definitely faster" than the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S.

If what Dustin means is that the dual HLA Multi-FS 85/1.2 ART has AF speeds approaching the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II, then the autofocus speeds could be 3.5x or more faster than the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S.

If this is the case his comments are justified.

I like it so far. Not too heavy, relatively well balanced. Reminds me of the original 85 GM 1.4 in handling and rendering.

The rendering is 85GM-like. I hope the AF motors are better though 😊

Oh, the AF is new GM like. It is perfect.

I am also happy with the restricted burst rate of the Sigma lenses on the A9iii, mostly because I'm not shooting fast-action sports with these lenses, but even then, it is totally respectable.

Actual max burst is around 17fps for anyone wondering.
