An Odd Request!

p.1 #1An Odd Request!
Hi Everyone,

I come to you guys first because I regard you as the nicest and most professional group of photographers on the internet.

I fell in love with photography 25 years ago as an 11-year-old kid. That spark never left me, but financial hurdles have left me completely broke and unable to upgrade my gear. I'm putting a bold ask to you guys: Does anyone have an old Canon 24-105mm F4 L, a 24-70mm F2.8 L, or a full-frame Canon 6D gathering dust in a closet?

If you have gear you no longer use, donating it to me would quite literally change my life and give my dream a, somewhat, modern pair of wings.

Right now, I am struggling to keep up using a 2009 crop-sensor Canon 1D Mk IV and a lens from 1989—which is ironically the exact year I was born! I still have the passion and the skill, I just desperately need the tools. Thank you so much to anyone who can help!

It won't be easy for me, but I can definitely pay for shipping to anyone who can do this!

I'm putting a bold ask to you guys. The 1D Mk IV is an able body. It's somewhat outdated but still a very good body. I don't know what lens you have but good glass for EF is not very expensive. You can pick it up for not very much to couple with your body. Depending on what you have lens wise the three specific asks you made may not change much. All that said, if you don't ask you don't get and not the worse for asking. Good luck with your quest.

Thank you.. It's true that the body is capable.. The most important thing for me and the thing I ask for most is a lens. I really just can't afford a 24-105 or a 24-70.

I only have a 50 mm 1.8 and a 20-35 F2.8... That's the real issue. I need a lens that can do everything I need it to. The 6d would make me so happy, but it's not needed to the same degree.

Thank you for your positive thoughts. It's true that if you don't ask you don't get, and there's no harm in asking.

Might be worth looking at a lens like the 28-105mm f3.5-4.5. They’re dirt cheap on the used market and actually decent optically.

Hmm.. Okay. I hadn't heard of that as an option. I'll look into it! How cheap are we talking? We are doing BAD.. I'll look it up..

I had one that came with my 6D2 kit. It was actually slightly better optically than my EF 24-105 4L USM. Plus, the STM is a little smoother for movie servo.

You might be thinking of a different lens, perhaps the 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6, which is indeed a decent lens, but is much, much newer (and goes for around $300, so considerably more than the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5).

You can get them on MPB for around $100.

Note that, of course, the 24-105L is a better lens. The 28-105 has some softness at the edges at the wide end, and at the long end wide open, but it is certainly usable, and when on an extreme budget, it certainly will do the job.

I used it mostly for film with my EOS 650 and Elan...some shots with it on those cameras:

And here's one from the even older EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II, which is a VERY early standard zoom with a terrible focus motor....but you can still get decent images:

Yeah, I miss read. I was writing about the EF 24-105 3.5-5.6 IS STM. I've seen it going for a 2 or 3 Benjamin's many times.

I saw the $100 price tag that’s awesome. I wish I could afford it .. but now I know! Thank you! The pictures are nice!

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro would be a bargain alternative for that body, on MPB for $209-239.

I shot one on my original 5D for weddings.

Thank you all for these lens suggestions. Unfortunately I can't afford any of them at the moment. But now I have some options for when money is less tight.

Forgive me for saying this
But you have a Pro body and one Pro lens plus the 50 which is equivalent to 65mm on FF.

As many have suggested the old ef usm 28-105 would be a great addition.. yet you’re asking for a FF 6D and a L lens !!

Do you think we were born yesterday??
Like most on here, I’ve had my share of hard times, but never once did I go begging… genuine people in need are often too proud to accept charity let alone go begging.

The internet is awash with people “trying it on”

Now if you’d said I’m wanting to swap exchange my current kit for a 6D plus lens many might have considered helping - maybe they had your kit back in the day and fancy a trip down memory lane… but you didn’t say that, you’re basically targeting people’s conscience to make them feel guilty.

I’m calling you out.

Edited:
I was the same age as you 20yrs ago
Back then I had nothing like what you currently have - my only camera at that time was a eos600 film camera and the following year (2007) I bought a Sony T30 digital camera - it was all I could afford but I grabbed so many wonderful memories with that little camera.
The reason I couldn’t afford a better camera was because at that stage in life (like others) I had the commitment of a home and a young family.

Coming onto a public forum asking for freebies is pathetic.
You’re not a child, you’re 36yrs old - show some self respect.
