I recently grabbed one of canons last analogue film cameras… the 300X, boxed, mint, complete with lens and all accessories…£26 delivered!!
I then thought why not hunt down the 300D 6.3mp. I think it was canons first consumer digital body??
Found one, boxed with battery £15 delivered
It arrived a few days ago. Today I finished work early and decided to play…
Build quality is worlds apart from the R100, but jeez the rear screen and the interface is so outdated. So I concentrated using just the buttons and the viewfinder. Didn’t want to go above iso 100, so fitted a IS lens….18-135 is stm. Worked like a charm
I opted for raw just to see what would happen.
Luckily my old windows laptop had no problem opening the RAWs up??
Well, I’m loving the colours. The AF seemed accurate enough, obviously not to mirrorless standards, but it was fine.
Spent a hour or so outside just snapping. Brilliant fun. I’m going out again tomorrow, will pair it with a L optic… I’m curious what it will deliver.
Like I say, bucket loads of fun. Brilliant way to spend an afternoon. No pressure.

Limiting cameras to no less than $3000 or whatever would reduce the gasses. Nothing is more fun than using high-grade, modern gear. Rent/hire the R1 and fast L glass for a weekend. It's so responsive.

It is fun playing with some of the older gear. I have been recently using some very old manual focus lenses for a different look...it has been a lot of fun too...it doesn't break the bank either.
As a side note, I believe the 300D was the first Rebel, so you are using a newer camera
. The D30 (I owned one and still have the successor the D60) were the first Canon digital cameras (non-Kodak). The 30D is 3MP. It actually took surprisingly good photos. I bought it originally as a quick way to get views for studio work and quickly found out I really liked it and you could do more with 3MP (and later 6MP) than I realized.

Based upon the amount of gear you've accumulated as per this, and previous posts, I'd say there is no cure for you. You seem to be more interested in collecting gear than taking pictures.

You’ve complained about the state of photography before. It’s easy to turn much of the crap off by simply not going to the places where it shows up. And in the end we’re all only responsible for our own images. They got nothing to do with what others post on Instagram, etc.

But from what I keep seeing online, on YT, on forums… everything’s doctored so much these days, the subject is invariably a cliche.
It’s really hard trying to be original when buried in your consciousness is 1000’s of previous scenes that look exactly the same. So why even bother… hence the post editing that comes into play.
Like I say modern pictures today absolutely bore me to death as I believe none of it. None!!
This is probably why I’m drawn to Vivian Maier’s work
There’s a realism in her work that’s totally missing from the over sharpened over saturated, cloned fantasy snaps that constantly pop up

Well, I just went to the opening of the World Press Photo exhibit in Vienna. Those images are all checked for authenticity and each image depicts a particular news event or moment in time. They’re about as real as images can be. Still, after seeing these kinds of exhibits/books for much of my life now, so much looks identical to images of similar events in the past. The characters change, some of the places change, but there’s still a sameness to much of it. That’s of course an issue with everything that has been practiced for a long time, esp within the narrow creative boundaries of photojournalism.
Beyond that I believe it’s important that history gets captured, for myself photography is a bit like fishing: someone may have caught that fish or one like it before, but this one, this one, that’s MY fish. The fun is often in the fishing…

PixelPuffin, I totally agree with your 'cure for gas' philosophy. I like photography, all kinds of it. Over the last 25 years or so, I've owned probably 60 or 70 cameras. 35mm folders, 6x6 folders, 645 high-end gear, el-cheap-o digital, el-cheap-o film gear. I had fun shooting all of them. The joy of photography is 'doing' it. I don't buy 1DXIII bodies and then gloat about 'mine better than yours'. I buy something I've never had before and actually USE it. That ain't gas, that's enjoying one of my hobbies.
For the longest time my favorite film bodies were Yashica FX2 and FX3 S2K. Completely manual cameras. The battery only powered the meter, and so was completely superfluous. I shot my $25 cameras with mostly Contax Carl Zeiss C/Y mount lenses. Point? You don't need a $4,000 camera and $3,000 lenses to enjoy photography and get good results.
Some individual gears with comments. I wanted to experience medium format 120 film shooting. I bought into Pentax 645, before the prices got stupid. Had a 645, 645N, and 645NII. Had a bag of primes. Ever seen a contact set from 645 negatives? It is a thing of beauty. I shot that stuff or about 2 years, and sold it for more than I paid for it. Gas? No. Entertainment? Most certainly. I now own an R10. It has the 'new' Fv mode. The Pentax 645 had that in 1998.
645 led me to 6x6. I owned several of those in various conditions, mostly folders. The most fantastic one of the bunch was the Mamiya VI ivB. Its most unique feature was being a manual focus camera with a fixed focus lens. The lens did NOT focus. The camera focused by MOVING THE FILM PLANE to and fro. Gas? No. Fun? Yes. By the way, while shooting that camera, I regained an old photography skill. Estimating exposure. I got confident enough to shoot 6x6 120 film without a light meter. After a bit of that I added flash to the mix. I actually got my 580EX II to work perfectly with the Mamiya. Which means I got to polish my skills at estimating manual flash exposures, too. All great photography fun.
I think GAS means buying way more gear (1DXnn, R1) than you have a use for, and having it, but not using it up to its abilities. I don't do that. Ok, well, I did once buy a 6DII, not realizing that full frame offered absolutely nothing for the kind of shooting I do. I used it a few times, it sat on a shelf, then was sold at a loss. Gas? Most assuredly. Getting a camera you enjoy shooting, for under $100 is not gas, it is liberating.
My grandson just had a neighbor give him a TLR 120 camera, and a Brownie Hawkeye Flash 620 camera. Both appear to work just fine. He is in hog-heaven, looking forward to putting them both to work. He also got an 8mm movie camera in the deal. We're still trying to figure out what to do with that. Finding film, finding processing, finding a projector or a digitizing service. Yet another great photography adventure. Funny thing, I don't use my DSLR or MLC for video. Boring.

It’s not so much the GAS for me… it’s the hunt I enjoy. Spotting something well below usual market price, means I can buy, play and if need cash, sell on and recoup.. in other words it costs nothing…except my time.

I’m hoping my last GAS trip was the end. I was scared when I heard the rumors about a Sony 600 6.3, but when I saw it came out I didn’t have the urge to swap again at all.
