Did you know that with A7CII & A7CR it's possible to shoot stills in the cinematic aspect ratio of 2.35:1? You see the frame lines both while shooting and during playback.

The problem so far has been that aspect ratio has been lost when you import the photos to Lightroom.

That annoyed me so much I created a small free plugin that reads the aspect marker metadata from the image file and automatically applies the correct crop in LR. Works with any aspect ratio set with the Aspect Marker setting (MENU / Shooting / Marker Display): 2.35:1, 1.91:1, 16:9, 4:3, 5:4, 1:1

Get the plugin for your Lightroom Classic here: https://github.com/miemo/sony-aspect-marker-crop-lr-plugin – free to download and use, open source

And in case you're as confused as I was originally 😅

Sony has two separate kinda-the-same-but-different features:

The older Aspect Ratio setting (MENU > Shooting > Image Quality/Rec > Aspect Ratio: 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, 1:1) does crop: the JPEG comes out cropped, and the ARW keeps the full frame plus a crop flag that Lightroom honours with as As Shot crop.

The much newer Aspect Marker is guide lines only. It offers six ratios, 2.35:1, 1.91:1 and 5:4 among them, and it leaves both the JPEG and the ARW at full 3:2 in Lightroom. A7CII, A7CR, A1 (firmware 2.0 or later), ZV-E1 and ZV-E10 II have it, and probably other recent bodies.

This plugin is for the newer Aspect Marker.

My understanding is that in addition to A7CII, which I only have direct access to myself, A7CR, A1 (firmware 2.0 or later), ZV-E1 and ZV-E10 II should have the Aspect Marker feature, so should work with the plugin too. And I'd also guestimate that the recent bodies like A7V and A7RV would have Aspect Marker too, but TBH haven't even yet googled their instruction manuals.

Of course there IS a chance that the metadata differs between bodies, and if that'd be the case, then the plugin would not work unless updated with the correct metadata. Happy to hear reports from users with various Aspect Marker bodies, there's even a specific issue report link there on the Github repo page.
