I'm a bit surprised Fuji couldn't (or chose not to) have any independent reviewers review the lens - everything I could find on YouTube so far has been reviews by camera stores, most of which are terrible.
A lens that maybe I'd like to have, and don't really need, probably a no for me and others.
Looks like they chopped the back off the XF 500 and put the mount there. Almost all of the lens is reported by some to be exactly the XF500, except the back elements. Given it is only 100gms lighter and maybe an inch shorter, seems right.
Be interesting for a while to read the questions and/or comparisons to the the XF500 and even the XF70-300 with and without a 1.4 tele...

It absolutely smokes the 70-300mm, even without the sharpness loss from the TC. Pretty similar performance to the XF500 based on Fuji's MTF and similar optical design.
Nice to have such a lens in the line-up and hopefully it means good things for the next generation AF performance.
(I'd personally be more interested in a 250mm f2.8 with built-in TC though)
I shoot with Sony 61MP FF bodies since 2019 and for the last year 2 Fuji 40MP bodies. In comparing the new Fuji XF 400mm f4.5 to the new Sony GM 400mm f4.5, I am quite surprised that a Sony GM lens is $500 less expensive ($2,698 vs. $3,199 @ B&H) and 1/2 pound lighter (2.2 vs. 2.74 Lbs) than the Fuji offering! I have 3 GM lenses and they are stunning, including the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM since 2019. The new 400 f4.5 is almost a full pound less in weight than my GM zoom.
Both new lenses have linear motors (Sony 2 vs Fuji 1), WR construction, OIS and 95mm filter threads and the dimensions are almost identical, both are under 10 inches in length. The Sony has 23 elements vs 22 for Fuji. Two other Sony advantages are 11 vs 9 aperture blades and a removable vs fixed collar. Personally I like having a 400mm base lens, as for me that is normally plenty of reach where I photograph wildlife and jets at the Salton Sea. On the 61MP bodies a simple button push and I am at 600mm F/L with the in-camera crop mode, or I have a Sony A6700, which is an APSC crop body, though both will be at at 26MP. And I have the Sony1.4x tc too. I rarely ever need past 600mm with the GM zoom, but I can get there on Sony with both the crop and 1.4x tc. With the new Fuji I would have to buy a 1.4x tc (another $500) to get to 840mm, but I lose the 400mm F/L…..
My money is going to Sony in this case. The versatility of having a 400 mm base lens, the $500 and half pound weight savings are just too good to pass up.

We need to see what iq is like, but on the specs Fuji needs a rethink, heavier and more expensive while covering a smaller format is not good news.

Its hard to imagine how the Sony is a half pound lighter and basically the same size envelope. Time will tell if they went too far or if its good design.
Based on what I've seen regarding the size of the XF400 4.5 it seems more than bearable. The only thing I'd wish they'd refresh and put on a diet is the XF200F2. I'm not going to change systems over half a pound. SGinNorcal wrote:

The new Sony 600mm and 400mm lenses seem exceptional. Personally I find the 400mm more interesting because of brighter max aperture. With 1.4x TC it could easily replace the too heavy and large 200-600G.
It is nice to see new Fujifilm tele lens, even though it does not seem very competitive compared to other systems. There are Fuji users who need this lens. However, the comparison to Sony is fairly brutal. Sony has also better bodies for typical wildlife and sports use cases.
