I was out watching our resident Garden Orb Weaver, 'Charlotte', this morning, when a very unfortunate moth picked the wrong shrub to visit. As soon as the poor fellow hit Charlotte's web, she was on him like lightning -- they are so fast.
I immediately ran in and grabbed my camera that happened to have my 40-150mm f/2.8 attached, and got the following images of Charlotte doing her spider thing.

This is the first time I realized that they have three 'fang-like' claws at the tip of each leg. Among other things, that allows them to grab strands of web to wrap their prey, and also allows them to position strand when building or repairing their web -- fascinating critters for sure.

This is the first time I realized that they have three 'fang-like' claws at the tip of each leg. Among other things, that allows them to grab strands of web to wrap their prey, and also allows them to position strand when building or repairing their web -- fascinating critters for sure.
