I'd do it. But I am a bit biased. I have 2 M 10s and an M 10 Mono.

I don't think the math works. Plus you'd need to budget for lenses.

You'll be going from 47MP to 24MP ... and gaining lens interchange capability.

If you're cropping down the Q to get past its distortion correction or gain a cropped focal length, you're tossing some MP anyway, so the drop from 47 to 24 may not be as severe as it sounds on spec.

As to the dollar amount on the trade, reasonable (condition variable, etc.).

Me, I'm going to be letting my Q2 go (had it for several years now), and for the WA stuff, I have the 24/2.8 Elmarit as a chosen WA IQ optic to mount on the M / L. Granted, it doesn't have AF, but ... with WA dof, zone focusing, etc. not gonna miss the AF that much.

The other aspect is that the leaf shutter on the Q2 is super, super quiet, and has a modest amount of OIS assist. The M won't be THAT quiet, nor have any stabilization (you'll learn to manage shutter speeds / ISO's). On the flip side, the tactile engagement of the M shutter release is more satisfying (imo) than the electronic release of the Q (since it is not mechanically linked to the leaf shutter).

If you "want to try" what life with an M is like ... the "is this a great deal" question ... my answer is it is a fair deal. You're not getting taken advantage of (again, condition dependent, etc.), nor are you getting an amazing steal of a deal bargain. Thus ... should be close to a fair shake (condition dependent) ... as a path to exploration into the M journey.

Imo ... whether someone sticks with the M journey for a lifetime, or gives it a go and finds it "not for them" ... I think it can be a viable "rite of passage" to experience an M at least once in your life, for some folks.

Is this the time for you ... it's not a BAD trade, just a DIFFERENT one.

HTH

Speaking as an Leica M shooter...

Just to “try” the rangefinder experience? I wouldn’t. I also wouldn’t want to go from 47MP down to 24MP. And if you don’t already have M-mount lenses, you’ll be spending more money on lenses on top of the trade. If the Q2 is already working for you, I’d stick with it.

24mps is more than enough. I wish my M 10 mono was 24 instead of 40.

Here are some 18mps images from the M 9 Mono that I shot for a hospital client some years back. His wound up on a wall in a stairway as a 36 X 54 inch print that you could walk right up to. I upsized it with OnOne resize. And these resizing programs are so much better know that they were then.

And the final on the wall

One more.

Final

What I do find a bit odd is a lot of photographers want more and more MPs only to post 200 kb compressed jpgs on the web.

My last exhibit here in Chicago I had 12 X 18 inch prints that were all shot with 18mp and 24mp cameras (not upsized) and the prints were amazing. The mp wars kinda remind me a bit of the stereo watts wars of the mid to late 1970s.

I would rather have the M10, but, as already eloquently stated, above, in post #2, I, too, am biased, having two M10 original cameras, and an M10 Monochrom.

Plus, a Q camera is a chunky camera. Its one lens cannot be removed, to make it slimmer.

Edited, to correct the auto-corrected "Monochrome" to the intended Monochrom.

I'd say, yes. Pair it with a 35/2 or a 50/2. Enjoy.

I am not a Q buyer. I find Sony better for my AF needs. I can share that I am enjoying my M10r a lot! I have adapted to focusing quicker than I thought. It's easier to carry. Fun to hold. Fun to focus. Produces incredible images.

I just recently bought my "Q." A Nikon ZR! If I feel the need, I can buy an M-to-Z adapter....

For those among y'all who do not read the FM Nikon forum, My wife and I are both Nikon shooters. She is the senior photographer, and since going digital, before I even started using using interchangeable-lens cameras, she has been a firmly loyal Nikon shooter, F-mount, and adding Z upon launch in late 2018. I side-stepped into the Leica M system, in early 2018, specifically to start using one specific lens...

oh wow thanks so much everybody for the great insights!

Although still debating inside my head, I am leaning towards keeping my q2.
The mp doesn't worry me too much as I do not make full use of 48mp on my q2, but I think my time for a "m" will eventually come.

Purely by the numbers it's a fair trade:
- M10 is roughly $4000 USD
- Q2 is roughly $3000 USD

(All depending on condition.)

If you need to sell the M10 for $4000 USD later on, a buyer will pick it up in a month or two.
