p.1 #1Computer Monitors
I have been running my photo work on an Apple 27 inch I-Mac (last of the Intel processors) for the last 6 years, and it has been great. However it’s getting a little slow with large quantities of 45 Mp files downloading and creating previews. Also I know Apple is shortly going to stop supporting the Intel processors so today I preordered a Mac Studio with the M5 Max chip which should really speed things up. Now I need to decide on a new monitor to partner up with the Mac Studio. Typically I would just get the Apple the Apple Studio Display, which appears to be a lot better than my I-Mac builtin monitor with a new speaker system, brighter now at 600 nits, and FireWire 5 ports as well, as well as the Apple premium price.

I was wondering if any one has any experience or recommendations such as the Asus ProArt, or BenQ 27 inch that might be a better option.

Thanks
Dave

You can get a Studio Display refurb for pretty good prices quite regularly from Apple and they still have a generous return policy/warranty.

I don't have an Apple computer but, according to Google:

Standard Apple Studio Display (2022): This model supports the P3 wide color gamut and sRGB, but it only covers about 86% to 88% of the Adobe RGB color space. It is not designed for print workflows requiring full Adobe RGB coverage.

I have the Asus TUF VG289Q, which is identical to the ProArt with 4K IPS with about the same Adobe RGB coverage.

Per Google:

ASUS TUF Gaming VG289Q does not natively cover the full Adobe RGB color space, yielding an independent real-world measurement of roughly 82.8% Adobe RGB coverage.
100% coverage (officially rated).DCI-P3: 90%
coverage (advertised by ASUS Canada Tech Specs), with real-world tests clocking it around 87.4%.
Color Depth: 10-bit color (8-bit + FRC)
capable of displaying 1.07 billion colors.

I use my Asus alongside a Dell Pro P2419H monitor.

Often, the difference in grayscale is striking between the two monitors. What comes out as "mostly black" on the Dell shows good grayscale delineation on the Asus.

Considering that I picked up my 1 yr old Asus for $150 (CAD), I'd say that was a steal of a deal.

I'm partial to Eizo displays, especially for the autocalibration, but any high grade display for photo images should be 98-100% for aRGB and probably DCI-P3. The displays mentioned above that are not even 90% measured would be a poor choice IME. The calibration software should show you the actual color space on a 2D or 3D chart.

Firewire is obsolete for client computing AFAIK, but still used in some industries as a legacy communication bus. How are you planning to use it?

I think OP meant Thunderbolt 5 not Firewire 5.

FYI, most of the alternative 5K displays don't have built-in cameras (or speakers). So if you do video conferencing, you may want to consider that.

In the end the Apple display was the right answer for me.

I use a BenQ SW270C monitor. It covers 99% Adobe RGB color gamut. That is good enough for my needs and am happy with that. Only caveat is it is 1440p QHD. If you need/wish higher resolutions, you may have to check other models in BenQ or some other brands.

Whatever monitor you choose, make sure you understand how MadOS does scaling. It works great with 5K monitors, but you may have less desirable results with a 4K monitor.

I have the ASUS ProArt PA32UCDM 32 Inch 4K 240Hz OLED which I am very happy with. Having used OLED exclusively for several years (both or my laptops and home PC) I am spoiled by the beautiful colors and rich, deep blacks (no blooming).

The calibration was perfect out of the box and has required no tweaking since.

Not inexpensive but for me well worth it.

The ASUS ProArt 27" 4K UHD Professional Monitor (Model: PA279CRV) has advertised 99% Adobe RGB, 99% DCI-P3, and 100% sRGB coverage.

Not an OLED (like above) but still quite serviceable.

Bought my first Eizo (CG2730). It was high time, but didn't figure I had much to lose for $160.

It didn't blow me away intially, and is lower resolution that the consumer LG 4k, that I thought was well calibrated. Then, I had to process many photos from the local frou-frou car show, where the vechicles are all displayed on nicely manicured lawns. Didn't help that color temperature swung wildly during the day, from heavy overcast to sun. Started with raws and everything processed in aRGB. I simply could not get the green grass to look correct in most of the images, when viewed on the LG. Other colors were not as affected. After tearing my hair out for a bit, I examined the same images on the EIZO. Suddenly, all was right with the world.

Pull up one of the many plots that show both the aRGB and sRGB color boundaries on the same plot. Note that the greatest differences are in the green-yellow to green to green-blue color range. For color critical work, a good monitor can absolutely make a difference.

The GC2730 was about $2100 IIRC. Not sure if yours fell off the back of a truck or was appropriated or something. Mine is expired with like 40,000 horas. I burned it up with 12 hours/day due to WFH during the pandemonicum.

Well my main monitor, NEC MultiSync LCD3090WQXi may be dying......It has started to flicker and I have 2 DVI inputs but not in use but not at the same time. It is old..at least 20 years....

The monitor started a short flicker for a nano second ..frequency is getting worse...

I do NOT want to hijack this thread..so I will start a new on..I am on a PC..
