p.1 #1 · Any reason to own LLL 35mm f1.4 and f2.0 APO ?

Trying to understand if there is any value in buying both ?

I already just purchased 28mm APO F2. From Voightlander - has not arrived yet - but I am thinking if maybe I should just sell it and get two of the LLL lenses - 35mm F1.4 and F2.0 APO.

Would greatly appreciate any input.
Thanks

Even though both are 35mm lenses, I don't think they could be more different from each other. One is left uncorrected for spherical aberration, coma, and color error, while the other is corrected about as thoroughly as a lens can be within a reasonable size and price.

I also don't think the LLL 35mm f/1.4 Aspherical is a true replica of the rare Leica 35mm f/1.4 Aspherical (Also called double aspherical), which is a shame, in my opinion, but it improved on things a lot of people didn't like about the original Leica: smoother rendering with less outlining, and to many eyes, more pleasant, less structured rendering than the original. Ironically, if you actually want the look of the older Leica 35mm f/1.4 Aspherical, the current FLE I and FLE II versions are the closest thing to it today.

You seem to be “trying to understand things” that are not hard to understand in multiple threads in this forum. How do you not know what the metal titanium is (other thread) nor the difference between needing a 28mm lens versus two 35mm ones? Seriously?

Or new to being human if they don’t know what advantages titanium offers.

As someone that's never held or shot a titanium lens, and who is very NOT new to photography, I'd have the same very basic question. There is nothing intrinsic about the material itself that imparts the essence of its pros and cons as it relates to a lens barrel beyond being tough.

I think you should figure out whether you enjoy the field of view from 28 or 35 better? My typical rule of thumb is to have more options at my most common focal lengths. I have a lot of 50mm lenses because that's my most used focal length so I like something that has character but I also like to have something that has a flat field of focus.

I personally don't think there's a lot of value in having a 28 and a 35mm lens since the field of view is so similar. I like 21/35/50 personally. Some people prefer 28/50/75. First step is to figure out which focal length best works for you and how you see the world. From there you can figure out what you want from your lenses...clinical perfection or artistic character etc.

The classic conundrum need versus want. When I want to save money I use need as a determiner. Answer then is always "no". When I use want as the determiner the answer is many times "yes". I think of lenses as light brushes. I know how each uniquely renders. I once owned three Nikkor 35mm lenses, and sold one out of guilt. I still regret it. It is not rationale - it just is. I now own even more 35mm lens of various manufacturers, but I'm not going to count them up cuz I know where that leads.

Come on Scott, we all know lenses made with strong metals make the photos at least 200% better.

And here I am in Texas trying to avoid putting metal anything in the sun, who knew. Must be the thermal expansion that allows for more photons to hit the sensor.

OP its pretty typical that people own several 35mm lenses. Its a very handly general purposed focal length that can be used in a wide-range of different types of photography, whereas most other prime lenses tend to excel in one specific area. That being said, take two 35mm lenses and they may be able to frame the same shot, BUT the output can vary quite a bit. Especially since when you have a wide 35mm field of view, the rendering can vary quite a bit...particularly since a wide angle FOV will bring more background elements into the frame. Then you get into F2 vs F1.4, and larger lenses vs smaller ones. etc etc etc.

I tend to always have at least two 35mm lenses. One being a faster 35 with a gentler rendering for portrait use, and a better corrected but smaller F2 35mm for general purpose use.

Then a titanium lens might be your ultimate nemesis since it gets hotter and gets hotter faster than aluminum. In the cold it gets to the same temperature as aluminum but it doesn’t feel as cold.

Yeah, I'll have 3-4 35mm for M mount by year's end, but it's my favorite focal length for EDC.
1. Voigtlander 35mm F1/.5 (super small, very light, and sharp-ish but boring)
2. Mandler 35 F/2 (more like an F/2.5, but small with a quirky output due to extreme field curvature)
3. LLL 35 APO F/2 (a super corrected lens for landscape shooting)
4. LLL 35mm AA F/1.4 (will replacement the Voigtlander)

And if I hit the lotto I may own a 35 Noctilux one day because I do love the images out of that thing.

In seriousness to the OP, you have to first decide if you need the wider angle view of a 28mm lens versus the not-as-wide view of a 35mm lens. 28mm is like most phone cameras’ default lens view. If it doesn’t matter to you, then just look at the posts here that show images taken with all the lenses you’re considering and pick your favorite lens/lenses.

Yes, having both makes sense since rendering belong to diametrical opposites. But remember, you should also add a small pre-asph summicron (v4) for small size and everyday use when the other two will be a tad too large

But seriously - depending on what you like to shoot with, both lenses can make sense to have. I have the AA replica for organic rendering and then I have a zeiss c biogon when I need flat field curvature and small size. I also have a 28mm from Voigtlander (and I disagree with those who think 28 and 35 are similar - 28 invites you too get so much closer to the subject).

Cheers!
Ole

Not that long ago I was in (what I perceive to be) OP's shoes; new to photography with countless threads, videos, opinions, and articles to go with the countless gear options to parse through and not knowing where to start. I started off with an A7CR and GM lenses and although I couldn't place it, the images weren't resonating with me. Something started to change when I started playing with filters such as mist/polarizers and tweaking sliders in post and the look started to change into something that I personally enjoyed. Ultimately that led to me moving to Leica and shooting with a lot of adapted, modified, or otherwise "imperfect" lenses.

Some recommendations to OP:
-Find what focal lengths you like before investing in a ton of expensive glass. For me a zoom lens was great to try out different focal lengths but if you're on M that's not going to be very viable. Maybe try buying some cheaper easily adapted (preferably rangefinder coupled) lenses to see what personally resonates with you.

-Figure out if you want "corrected" vs "character" lenses or both. Going on Flickr or another photo sharing site or the threads here and browsing some of the lenses you are looking at is a great way to see what they are capable of. Just keep in mind many will be edited.

-Don't overthink gear and just shoot. Buy used if you can to minimize your sunk cost (the buy and sell section here is great) if you decide something isn't for you but ultimately just getting out there and taking pics is the best way to find out what works or doesn't for you. You might think one focal length or style of photography is what you're going to be focused on but then you might find out that something else starts to appeal to you more.

As for whether you need multiple lenses of the same focal length, I think that will ultimately depend on where you land in what matters to you. I currently have six 35mm lenses with another two on the way, one of which is the LLL APO while already owning the LLL 1.4 AA. This is way too much gear for the level of skill I have, but hey we all have our vices. One thing that is true though, is I've spent a ton of hours researching gear that ultimately would have just been better getting out into the world and capturing things that interest me.

Consider a used Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH FLE v1. It will cost more than the lenses on your list, but by Leica standards it's a good buy because it isn't the current v2. I don't prefer the v2's looks or features anyway, and the optical design is the same. It's my favorite 35mm of all time. If you want even more character, look at the Canadian 35mm f/1.4 pre-ASPH.

If I were you, I'd pump the breaks on the spending. You've got one of the best 28's available winging its way to you. I would use it a little before you decide to buy two of the same focal length.
