If, in the end, it brings more joy, more variety, and thus more motivation, then it’s the right path.
I mean, I still use my manual-focus Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 L, simply because I enjoy working with that lens and with manual focus.
I don't take that as masochism, though, even though an 85mm f/1.2 with manual focus alone practically begs for that label.
And to be honest, high-quality manual-focus lenses like the Canon, my Voigtlander, or even the Thypoch 28mm f/1.4 often bring me more joy than my Z-mount S-line lenses.
From a rational standpoint, the Z lenses are, of course, significantly better than my old vintage lenses, like the 85/1.2 L or my father’s old CZJ Biotar 58/2.
But not everything is always rational—emotions and sheer fun also play a role.
So, for me, it would be masochism to suppress that.
That aside, I'm also an aesthetics junkie.
It's basically irrational, but for me, a camera, a lens, or the combination of the two has to look as good as possible and have a cohesive design—even if that doesn't actually matter at all for the final result.
I mean, the emotions, the passion, but also the unique aesthetic appeal and design of some of those special older lenses and cameras—who am I, as a German, to explain that to an Italian, that's almost sacrilege.
I like and love some of my Z lenses, and depending on the situation, there’s simply no getting around them—but even though there are masterpieces among them, like the Plena, using only Z-mount lenses with AF would just be too bland for me.
It’s not just about the end result; it’s also about the process of getting there.
To each his own—but you're more likely to see me driving an old Alfa Romeo Spider with a manual transmission than a modern hybrid BMW, at least when having fun/feeling good is the main thing.
