p.2 #1 · Am I a masochist?

I fail to see how using my D850/D5 cameras can be considered masochistic. Big, beautiful OVF. Reliable, accurate AF, in most conditions. (Z-cams can, of course, AF in some conditions that defeat DSLRs.) Natively accepts some of my most-favored lenses, on the planet, with no need for an FTZ. To a lesser degree, the same is true of my D4s and D700 cameras.

Maybe I am a caveman, but, something about looking at a tiny TV, that is at the end of a tiny tunnel, just ain’t the same…

Not that I hate Z-cams. To use a Thom Hogan term, I “sampled” Z, this summer. I bought a Z30, hurriedly, when my wife told me that she had, uh, volunteered us to shoot her friend’s wedding. Thankfully, the couple had hired a pro, so, we simply captured candid images, discreetly, from angles the pro was not shooting. My wife used the Z30, and exercised her prerogative to keep it. (She is the mentor, who guided my start into serious shooting, so, I let her “pull rank.”) So, I weighed whether to spend money on a second Z30, or a ZR, and then bought the second Z30, and learned to appreciate the articulating screen. With the Nikkor 26mm “pancake” lens, I found the Z30 to be really like-able.

After experimenting with Mirror-Deprived EVF-lessness, I decided to buy the ZR, too. Rumors of a firmware update that would change the landscape for ZR shooters meant that the ZR could become suddenly an “in thing,” so, better to act sooner than later, while some stores still had stock. The Big, Beautiful, Articulating LCD Screen. Nice!

OK, now, back to this masochism thing. The ZR has even fewer familiar buttons than the Z30! But, that big, beautiful LCD, for finger-painting, er, I mean adjusting things….
