I have noticed the blitz of you-tube influencers who are talking about using the ZR as a still-image camera. Some of the influencers have called it a “full-frame (Ricoh) GR.” That may indicate a strategy by Nikon, which I do not yet fully understand, BUT, a local camera store employee did put a ZR in my hands, which made me instantly think “FX Coolpix A, with articulating screen, and Z-mount, for adult-sized hands.” Where has THIS been, all my life?! I was almost certainly going to buy a ZR, anyway, plus the 26mm Nikkor Z “pancake” lens, even before I saw the you-tubers, during my on-line homework, before buying.
For those of y’all who do not remember the Coolpix A, it had the same DX sensor as the D7000, a permanently-mounted 18.5mm lens, for a 27mm “equivalent” angle of view, a flash shoe that played well enough with Nikon Speedlights, and a sturdy metal body, Made In Japan. I found its metal-and-rubber ergonomics to be better than the Ricoh GR, but, of course, the more icky-plasticky GR, with worse-for-me ergonomics, and lower price point, was what the end-line-users wanted. The Coolpix A also competed against the now defunct X-series Leica cameras, and the Fuji X100-series.
So, maybe Nikon will be thinking about lenses that will take advantage of the ZR’s compactness?
Or, if enough buyers take the bait, to buy new ZR cameras, Nikon will release more cinema-oriented lenses?
Thus far, I have been working with my ZR, as a stills camera, including using the big, beautiful 4” articulating screen, under the harsh Texas sun, in August. Who needs an EVF, anyway? Until July of this year, I was prepping my budget to be able to accommodate a Z9 by early 2027, to be my first Z camera, a logical move, considering that I use D5 and D850 DSLRs. Instead, I have embraced EVF-lessness….
Edited to add: I actually bought a pair of Z30 cameras, before I bought the ZR. I wanted to test the theory of EVF-lessness at a lower price point, before committing to the ZR. My wife* immediately claimed that first ZR, and the first 26mm Nikkor lens I bought, so, I bought a second Z30, for myself. Within two days of using the second Z30, I proceeded to buy the ZR.
*Wife is the more-senior photographer, so, I deferred to my first mentor, the one who cajoled me into finally becoming serious about shooting, about 2009. She uses D500, D850, and Z6 cameras.
