For those of you that have purchased travel insurance for a safari or other photography trip with significant cost beyond the airfare, approximately what percentage of the cost of the entire trip were you charged for insurance?
I'm a bit surprised that the quote I got from Allianz is nearly 15% of the cost of my entire trip.
I've used Squaremouth on multiple trips and found their website to be very helpful in comparing numerous travel insurance plans. The cost of travel insurance plans vary greatly for the same journey/expense and for rather similar coverage. Squaremouth allows you to filter the insurance plans based on the degree and characteristics of coverage desired and then presents you with the insurance companies and their costs. They make the decision and purchasing process very easy as well as providing helpful documentation.
I hope this is helpful in your decision process.
Travel insurance can get pretty expensive if you buy good coverage. I always purchase it but have never needed it so have no experience with claims.
My last two trips and my upcoming trip have been insured through Faye Travel Insurance. They have a somewhat modular approach so there are components of the insurance that you only pay for if you want them.
Having a way to compare plans, as @aryaah mentioned, is really valuable. Also make sure to research customer experience in the event of a claim.
