Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar "Close-Focus" - Intro:

Is the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar Close Focus the most compact, high-performing 90mm telephoto with macro capability ever made?

Cosina officially announced the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar Close Focus lens on July 15, 2026, following its early showing at CP+ 2026 back in February, and on paper it's a bit of a standout. At 54.8mm long, it's the shortest 90mm lens ever made for the Leica M system, and one of the lightest, yet it brings an apochromatic design aimed at reducing axial chromatic aberration to near-zero, plus close-focus capability down to 0.5m without needing a separate adapter. That combination alone raises expectations.

   Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar mounted on a black paint Leica M10-R

What makes this lens particularly interesting is how clearly it was designed around the rangefinder experience. By choosing a slower f/4 aperture, Cosina was able to keep the barrel short enough that it doesn't intrude into the 90mm framelines, even with the included low-profile hood and even at its rangefinder-coupled minimum focus distance. In use, it handles more like a compact 50mm than a typical telephoto, something you can't say about most 90mm lenses.

Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar optical design and MTF performance

The optical formula is straightforward, 8 elements in 7 groups, with six elements built from anomalous partial dispersion glass to keep color fringing in check. Just as notable, Cosina skipped aspherical elements entirely, likely because they matter less in a short telephoto design, and to keep the rendering smooth without the onion-ring pattern in specular highlights aspherics can sometimes introduce. The overall approach leans classic and symmetrical, favoring consistent rendering over optical shortcuts.

   Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar mounted on a Leica M3

Aside from the slower f/4 aperture, that level of compactness doesn't come at the cost of close-focus performance. In fact, the lens focuses down to 0.5m, which is very rare for a 90mm lens, offering a magnification ratio of 0.28x, exceeding 1/4-macro capabilities. It includes a focus click at 0.7m, a tactile signal that the rangefinder can no longer couple beyond that point. So the design pushes closer, into quasi-macro territory, once you switch to live view focusing past that click.

Leica M10-R Black Paint with Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar extended to its 0.5 MFD

Like previous Cosina lenses, the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar Close Focus features all-metal construction and a robust helicoid. The focus ring is smooth and well damped, allowing precise adjustments with a simple twist. Focus throw is 135 degrees from infinity to 0.7m, and 220 degrees from infinity to 0.5m. At 0.5m the lens extends quite a bit, nearly doubling in length.

   Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar vs Voigtlander 90mm f/2 APO-Ultron and Leica 90mm f/2 Summicron-APO ASPH.

Cosina's build quality continues to impress me. After years of testing Voigtlander lenses, I've never encountered a loose aperture ring, sticky focus, or any mechanical play. Tolerances are consistently high for a third-party manufacturer, and now come very close to Leica standards. Just as important, every recent sample I've tested has been perfectly aligned with the rangefinder, which gives real peace of mind for rangefinder shooters.

Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar with included metal hood

The aperture ring rotates in half-stop clicks from f/4 to f/22, with a firm, precise feel.
It pairs naturally with Leica M bodies and hardly feels like a telephoto in use. It handles more like a 50mm lens, which is rare for this focal length.
The 10-blade aperture produces well-defined, 10-point sunstars.

In this review, I'll take a close look at how the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar Close Focus performs in real-world use, covering resolution, contrast, aberration control, and overall rendering. I'll also compare it directly against the faster 90mm f/2 APO-Ultron stopped down to f/4, focusing specifically on how their rendering differs once aperture and performance converge.

Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar adapted to Nikon ZF

I'll also test the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar Close Focus adapted to the Sony A7R II and Nikon Zf mirrorless cameras, to see whether their thicker sensor stacks introduce any performance penalty compared to Leica M bodies.

I will look forward to your review... Very small lens for a macro.

It will be also interesting to compare it with other macro m lenses, Leica 90mm (mfd:0.41m ~ 1:2 reproduction ratio with macro adapter) and Laowa 85mm (2x macro). Laowa is a very close to an apo, but 1 stop slower and has bad flare resistance:

I may also compare it to the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 Macro since I own that lens. I mostly use it for film "scanning."

Samples 1: A few portraits

Most of the images were taken wide open at f/4. The Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar isn't a lens I'd normally reach for when shooting portraits, since it's super corrected and doesn't have a fast aperture, but depending on the background and subject, it can definitely still work for portraits.

Post-processing was kept minimal, with only light sharpening and slight exposure adjustments applied. I used the Adobe Standard profile to better showcase the lens's natural color rendering.

I've always been impressed by the rendering of the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar, and this lens gives me a very similar impression, with that same overall corrected look.

No corrections were applied for distortion, vignetting, or chromatic aberration, allowing the lens's native rendering characteristics to be seen more clearly.

Infinity Resolution and Contrast on Leica M10-R (41MP)

The Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar is a lens designed to be used wide open. At f/4, it delivers excellent resolution, strong contrast across the entire image field, and very well controlled chromatic aberration. Stopping down to f/5.6 improves high frequency detail only very slightly, and f/8 already introduces diffraction that's noticeable on high megapixel sensors.

This behavior is reminiscent of Leica's SL APO lenses, which also perform best wide open. Stopping down too much diminishes high frequency detail rather than improving it, with the main benefit being reduced vignetting. On the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar, I see a big improvement in vignetting going from wide open to f/5.6, so for many applications where strong vignetting isn't desirable, f/5.6 should be the default aperture as long as the lens is supported or there's enough light.

For landscape work, I'd still default to f/5.6 unless shooting handheld in low light, where wide open is also a great option. Stopping down to f/5.6 may give a slightly more balanced result across the frame, but at f/8, diffraction becomes clearly visible, which is expected at that aperture on this sensor.

Given its ultra compact size, relatively simple optical formula, and no use of aspherical elements, Cosina clearly did their homework with this lens. It is a rare case where restraint in design produces a genuinely mature optic, delivering results that punch well above what a compact telephoto lens suggests.

I think it's fair to compare the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar Close-Focus to the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO, since both are slower lenses designed for compactness, both are apochromatic, and both offer macro functionality, although the Laowa definitely takes the cake with its 2x macro (double life-size).

Infinity Resolution and Contrast: Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar vs Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Macro APO

Compared to the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO, the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar performs much better off-axis, away from the center of the frame. At f/5.6 and f/8, both lenses perform well at center, but once you move into the mid and corner zones, the Voigtlander maintains a high level of performance while the Laowa lags noticeably behind. I only compared the two at f/5.6 and f/8 since diffraction takes hold on the Cosina lens beyond that, but knowing the Laowa 85mm from using it for scanning negatives, it typically needs f/10 or even f/11 before the corners really come alive.

Correction looks great. A quiet achiever, unfussy and highly effective. 43mm filters, 230 grams. I love the hood, plenty of protection and stylish.

It's going to become a fixture in many bags, and at 90mm it has sufficient separation when needed. MFD and bokeh will be very interesting. It focuses closer than the SL 90/2 APO, 0.5m to 0.6m. And portraits!

Infinity Resolution and Contrast: Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar vs Voigtlander 90mm f/2 APO-Ultron

This is the comparison I was most curious about, since both are recent Cosina lenses and both are APO designs. The APO-Ultron is two stops faster, which means at f/4 it should, in theory, perform much better than the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 wide open.

That does seem to hold true at center only at f/4, but away from center, the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar holds its own and actually outshines its APO sibling at any aperture. It captures higher frequency detail at the mid-zone and corners right from wide open, compared to the Ultron stopped down two stops to match. Not only does it perform better at f/4, it holds that performance from f/5.6 onward as well. A truly fantastic showing for the new 90mm f/4 compact from Cosina.

For landscapes, both lenses are optimal at f/5.6 and perform similarly, though I still give a slight edge to the Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar for its size, weight, and slightly better performance even stopped down. That's saying a lot, since the Voigtlander 90mm f/2 APO-Ultron was the first 90mm M-mount lens I've tested to dethrone the Leica 90mm f/2 Summicron-APO ASPH at f/5.6 onward.

A note on centering for anyone curious: the Voigtländer 90mm f/2 APO-Ultron and the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 APO are my personal copies, and both are perfectly centered. The Voigtlander 90mm f/4 APO-Lanthar is a production "sample" from Cosina, hand-picked to represent the lens at its best. Cosina has made a huge leap in production tolerance recently, so I rarely get a copy that's off-spec straight from the line. Since these resolution and contrast tests are done at the pixel level, I like to work with optimal copies whenever possible, so the comparisons stay as fair as they can be.

Fred, how difficult/fiddly do you find this lens to focus carefully or precisely at far distances? The focus throw looks pretty short for critical far distance focusing... The 90/2 doesn't look much different but might be slightly better?

I find it easy to nail rangefinder focus with this lens. The focus throw is 135° from 0.7m (220° from 0.5m), and at f/4 there's plenty of rotation available for precise focus adjustments. The Voigtlander 90mm f/2 APO-Ultron is harder to focus by comparison, since its throw is only 90°, and combined with its much narrower depth of field, that makes nailing focus tougher, especially given how small the 90mm frameline is to begin with.

I don't own the Elmar, but with only four elements and being a much older design, I don't think it will perform as well as this lens. I may be able to test it at some point, but I can't promise it'll happen soon.

Something worth considering: the Voigtlander's native magnification (without any adapter) is almost 0.3x, while the Leica Elmar's native magnification is only 0.15x. With the Macro Adapter at its longest extension, the Elmar's magnification jumps to 0.5x, a gain of about 0.35x.

Since both lenses share the same 90mm focal length, that same physical extension should add roughly the same gain in magnification to the Voigtlander as well. If that holds true, the Voigtlander mounted on the same Macro Adapter should land somewhere around 0.63x, well beyond the Elmar's 0.5x. We don't know this for sure since it hasn't been tested yet, but the math suggests the Voigtlander could end up considerably ahead of the Leica when using the same adapter.

Thanks Fred, for your feedback about the focusing action.

I think EMH's query is more about image quality at that distance. Does the VM hold up as well at MFD or closer, as it does at infinity?

I think we can already get a good initial impression about this lens at close to MFD from Juha's CP+ photos, most of which were of objects containing text and at close distances. To my eyes the VM appeared to perform really well. Perhaps slight LoCA became apparent, but very, very minimal.

I had the 90 ME until a few months ago and the VM 90/4 definitely appears to outperform it with respect to off-axis CA correction at far distances. The 90 ME wasn't all that bad in this regard, but it did have visible lateral CA.
