p.1 #1 · Sony Gear Talk - General / Non-Specific

If this is a dumb idea, delete it or let it die, but I didn't want to gunk up other picture threads with general conversation.

I'll start with a complaint, that's a bit specific lol. Sony, please update the 24-105 and give us a 2.8 option.

I used my 20-70 F4 today along with my A1 for a casual street hockey game. I had access around the entire "rink". The range was good, albeit a bit short, even with popping in to APSC mode. I used 20mm a few times to get unique shots I otherwise wouldn't have been able to, but I really needed a 24-105 2.8 like Canon makes, or an updated Sony 24-105 F4. The 20-70 focused incredibly well when zooming in and out. Not sure it was perfect as I was re-pressing my back button AF, but I only missed a handful of shots in total out of 1,600, and I'd say those misses were my fault. Hated the jpegs when I got home, glad I shot raw.

I know everything is a compromise, especially when only shooting on one body.

- 70-200 would have been nice, but 70 would have been way too tight.
- 50-150 would have been great but 50 was also too tight for one body. I still would have had to swap out lenses for the team photos.
- 35-150 would have been good, but non native AF, and doesn't focus while zooming, and 35 would probably have been a hair too tight. My final group photo of the day was 30mm.
- 28-105 would have probably been wide enough, but same issue with the autofocus from what I understand.
- I'm hopeful Samyang 28-135 will be good, but I'm guessing it will struggle with autofocus in action events like all the rest.

I don't want to be a Nikon convert, but I might have to rent a Z9 and the 24-120. Would Sony give us a 24-105 2.8 or would that eat sales from their their 50-150?

Anyway, what do you want to talk about?

Hey Moses, at first glance I thought you took some shots of the Maple Leafs off-season :-)

You should try the Sigma 28-105/2.8 but if you shoot sports/action like those you should shoot with a native lens and get the max fps. But maybe 15 fps. is enough? I haven't tried mine for sports but for some action the AF is outstanding!

The lens I am eagerly anticipating is the Viltrox 50/1.2 LAB N. I really hope Viltrox launches it in time for fall colours. That way I can test it and post the images---where else but the 3D Pop thread. I'm pretty sure they can't wait to see more images from lenses exhibiting that 3D Pop!!!

I agree, the scene makes me want to ask Sony for favors, but of a different kind. We need a proper 28mm GM lens! This opportunity is perfect for a 28mm prime.

Agreed! I may give the 24 1.4 a run in the mean time. Seems pretty excellent.

I may rent it, it has a lot going for it but from the reviews I've seen none of the non-native lenses can focus while zooming, which is really important for me. I don't have enough time to zoom out and refocus each time, as a player is running towards or away from me. I have no doubt it would do fine at a fixed length, with a player moving in and out, but I've been very spoiled by native glass now.

Unfortunate that a 50-150 doesn't replace a 24-70 for me

Anyone know how well the almost 10 year old 24-105 F4 does with focusing while zooming?
