I went to my nearby park the other morning. There wasn't much going on, but I did manage a few decent shots. I spotted a Green Heron a ways down the pond and was making my way to him when intercepted by a guy with his dog. He stopped me and started asking me about my gear, and I didn't want to be rude, so spoke with him for a few minutes. By the time we were through the Greenie had gone and I never saw him again.

Western Kingbird? Merlin insists it is, but I don't see any belly color.

Very nice set Greg. Lens thinks it's a Western Kingbird. There is just a touch of yellow on the belly and I'm wondering if that's a reflection from the foliage rather than your subjects coloring.

Thanks, Douglas. My efforts have been a bit frustrating lately. This morning I went out back with the dog and saw a large bird several streets over in the top of a tall tree -- it didn't look like any hawk I was familiar with, so ran in and grabbed my camera just to get an ID photo. I got two quick shots before he took off, not to be seen again.
Turns out it was a Mississippi Kite -- first one I've ever seen around here.
Here is one of the shots from way too far away and cropped like an Army haircut.
