My network has been providing some great tips on where to shoot lately. This time it's Ruby-throated hummingbirds feeding from a bright red Cardinal flower in a small park on Long Island. I was surprised that 1/3,000 was freezing the wings and once I discovered this I slowed my shutter to around 1/1000 which gave me the look I prefer.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
Morris

Amazing work here. All are lovely and in particular 2, 4 and 8 really jump out for me. Were you able to use the electronic shutter for these guys or did you switch to mechanical?

Thank you Tgrantster,
These are all witht he electronic shutter. I have it set for auto and never touch the setting. The camera switches to mechanical at about 1/30 and longer.

Thank you Sreedhar,
That's one of the reasons I like to use 40 FPS as I get lots of choices of wing and body position.

Great set! Looks like the guy who visits my feeder!
Thank you Allynb,
They are the only hummingbirds we get in NYC. This is a female or juvenile. The males have the rouby throat and most have already headed south. The females will stay into september with there young.

Thank you Dan,
I'm about 15 feet away using my Fuji X-H2s which is an APS-C body and Fuji's wonderful 500mm f5.6. This means I'm cropping to about 1/3 the frame's width.
