If you’d happily switched systems why would it matter if Canon later brought out APS-C lenses?
Define “upheaval”. Are you worried about having to learn a new user interface? Are there particular lenses you own that you do want to keep?
Approach it rationally. For the user interface, download the manuals for the other brand and watch instructional videos, and see whether the camera operation for that brand makes sense to you. For the lenses, research what equivalents are available and the changeover cost.
I’ve been with canon since the mid 80’s.
Pretty unusual, I would think. I used Olympus from the early 80s to 2005, when I switched to Canon. Arguably Sony meets my needs better now but I do currently have all I need in Canon – until something critical breaks that is now out of production and service.

OM System have a very nice system with an even smaller sensor. They offer funky retro cameras, and also very high end wildlife and outdoors items for people who want to carry less weight. You might like the retro ones.
Even a used Leica Q series or Sony RX1 series compact might have been in your budget, and suit your concerns about faffing with lens changes and conspicuousness.

I bought the 1.4 trio (16,30,56) for my M50
Works great but I miss IS.
To swap systems now would be a major undertaking. Tbh I think I’d just not bother and go the phone route instead.
I’d lose a lot of money trading in and eBay now charges vat plus all the scammers that frequent the platform. I got scammed about 5-6yrs ago for £2.5K!!
No one would believe me neither eBay nor PayPal. I kept reopening the case and the seller slipped up by sending a fake Royal Mail letter. Royal Mail picked up on it and called in the police. Only then did I get a refund. But the seller had threatened me saying he would be watching in future. So I’ve never listed eBay since.

Yes, but you’re digging yourself into an even deeper hole by buying multiple unsuitable Canon lenses and having to sell the surplus ones.
At least in the UK you have at least one prominent online used camera equipment dealer where you can sell stuff online and just ship it off without the hassle.
At some point you have to accept that Canon has moved on and is not catering to you. Like Ford and hatchbacks.
