p.1 #1 · When will Voigtlander release a new 50mm lens?

Of course, unless you're an insider, no one knows for sure if a new 50mm lens will be released; however, based on past product launch schedules, do you think there's a possibility it might come out sometime in 2026? The most recent 50mm F1.2 is too heavy for my Preference, so I’d love to see a lightweight lens—around 200g with an F2.0

They have Nokton Vintage Line 50mm F1.5 Aspherical II (2020 release) at 198g and Color-Skopar 50/2.2 (2024 release) at 135g currently in production. I don't think there would be a new 50mm VM lens in the plans for this year but they might replace the Nokton with a new version sometime in the future. If they do so, they would probably first discontinue the current version and release a new version several months later, but so far the current version hasn't been discontinued.

I don't think they'd make a regular 50/2 Ultron in the near future as those 2 lenses pretty much cover the same ground and they are both below 200g.

They also have 50/1, 50/1.5 Heliar classic, 50/2 & 50/3.5 Apo-Lanthars (multiple versions) in production as well so there are lots of options at 50mm as it is.

Yes and both are excellent. The 50/2.2 is my workhorse as I prefer lighter, smaller lenses but before that, I used the 50mm/1.5 as my main 50mm.
The 50/1.2 is maybe big but very impressive too. I sold because because having it calibrated on a rangefinder was a PITA.
I do not see the need for another 50mm but with Voigt, who knows?

How many more 50mm options could you possibly need?

I think Cosina granted your wish with the 50mm f/2.2 Color-Skopar: only 135 grams, close-focus down to 0.5m, and solid performance. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1863477/

There's nothing wrong with owning many 50mm lenses, but the more you have, the harder it gets to decide which one to actually shoot with. I'm guilty as charged, I've ended up with way too many. Eventually, I plan to narrow it down a bit: a well-corrected APO, something very compact, something very fast, and one or two I simply love for its character.

Here's my current list, from fastest to slowest:

Leica 50/1 Noct
MS Optics 50/1 ISM
Light Lens Lab 50/1.2 1966
Leica 50/1.4 pre-ASPH v3
Leica 50/1.5 Summarit
Leica 50/2 Rigid
Light Lens Lab 50/1.5 Z21
Light Lens Lab 50/1.9 ZS6
Light Lens Lab 50/2 Cooke SP2
Light Lens Lab 50/2 Elcan
Voigtlander 50/3.5 APO-Lanthar

Similar in rendering: Leica 50/2 Rigid, Light Lens Lab 50/2 Elcan, and Light Lens Lab 50/1.9 ZS6, my favorite of the three is the new ZS6.

The LLL 50/1.5 Z21 and 50/2 SP2 are both very unique lenses and stand out to me. I'm also a big fan of the three fast options at the top, each one is distinct in performance and rendering. The MS Optics is just a super compact f/1, and that alone makes it special.

I could continue to purchase some 50mm to no end, it’s the focal length I like most when I feel two 35mm and a 75mm are enough, I don’t own more.

I was always looking for a combination of feats that would match what I like and with all the new players that have joined the game in the recent years(it’s really quite recent), it has given me some unlikely options looking back at how hard it was before that.

Recently I managed to get a Peace Lens 50mm 1.4 and it might be the lens that has it all regarding what I like.(you told me so a long time ago that I would be happy with a Summilux pre-Asph, you were quite right)
I will still look at the new, options though, the Lailens, The Shoten Tribute…etc

My favorite 50mm for now should be:

-Light Lens Lab "1966" 50mm 1.2 / Light Lens Lab Z21 50mm 1.5 battling for the 1st place
-Peace Lens 50mm 1.4
-Light Lens Lab SP II 50mm f2(even though I said for a while that I wished they made another version with warm coating to get rid of those blue flares and give some more pleasing artefacts, I believe that their new 75mm would prove my theory right)
-MS-Optics 50mm 1.3(I could wish for a new version also, the flares are not really pleasing on that one)

Well, all this proving that there is room for some more, many more.

Love the 50 mm FL - here is my list. I prefer the classic look over the modern one.

I have been using the CV 50/2.2 for two years and strongly recommend it. It is tiny, very lightweight ((far below 200g) and very close to f/2 (I carry it and the 28/2.8 every day everywhere; both lenses are so light and compact they are barely noticeable in the bag).
Voigtlander has often marketed several lenses which are close in terms of focal and aperture, but at this point, I see little space for another compact 50/2, unless it had a very different rendering.

I'm not even a major user of 50mm and I have too many.

Leitz Summilux v2
Leitz Elmar 50/2.8
Leitz Elmar 50/3.5 LTM
CZ P50/1.4 C/Y
Yashica 50/1.4 ML C/Y
Yashica 50/2 ML C/Y
Canon EF 50/1.4
Viltrox 50 Air Z

The only C/V offering of interest to me is a 50/3.5 (preferably the one that really collapses).

I also have a fairly large number of 50mm lenses, between multiple mounts.

E-mount:
- CV 50/1, 50/1.2 SE, 50/2 APO-Lanthar
- Zeiss Otus ML 50/1.4
- Sony 50/1.4 GM
- Sony Zeiss 50/1.4

M-mount or LTM:
- CV 50/1.5 Nokton II, 50/1.5 Heliar classic, 50/2 Heliar classic, 50/3.5 APO-Lanthar
- MS-Optics 50/1.3 Sonnetar, MS-Mode 50/3.5 (Heliar type), Xenomax 50/3.5, Lumitar 50/3.5 (MC and Uncoated versions)
- Topcor-S 50/2, 50/2.8 (Heliar type)
- Tanaka Kogaku H.C. Tanar 50/2
- Canon 50mm f/1.5 LTM

Also a few SLR lenses that are not in active use these days, including Pentax K 50/1.2 and Minolta MC Rokkor-PG 50/1.4 and a few more.

I'm still interested in getting some more character lenses at 50mm, such as Shoten Tribute 01 (pre-ordered) and remain interested in MS-Optics 50/1 ISM and 50/1.1 Sonnetar if they are re-released in the future. I'm not that much in need of additional high performing / well corrected 50mm lenses at this point.

I was just looking at the 50 APO-Lanthar the other day, lamenting its very short focus throw, making accurate focus (at distance) harder than it needs to be. It's superb sharpness really shows any minor focus errors. This lens is extraordinary but I rarely use it, because of the above.

I really, really hope they adapt the CV 50/1.5 Nokton II to Z mount, keeping the small size. It's great that Z-mount folks have the 50 APO, but it's too big.

'The Voigtländer 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar Sony E-mount version features a longer focus rotation of approximately 135 to 140 degrees, whereas the Leica M-mount (VM) version uses a shorter focus throw tailored for traditional rangefinder coupling, typically rotating around 90 to 120 degrees down to its coupled limit.'

Very much a matter of personal preference and usage intention, need for accuracy or for speed? Maybe a Zeiss Otus ML 50/1.4 would suit - 260-270 degrees, that's a real two-hand grab. It's another specification I'd like to see listed in data sheets and reviews (along with focus breathing FL/AOV at MFD and two metres). Some important things are seldom revealed to the unsuspecting buyer.

Totally get that, John! For what it's worth, the 50/2 APO-Lanthar's focus throw is 90 degrees, same as most modern Leica 50mm lenses, including the 50/1.4 Lux ASPH. So if the sharpness at f/2 is already revealing focus errors for you, imagine how unforgiving it'd be at f/1.4! It really is a case of "great lens, high standards."

I like my 50mm lenses the way I like my women - compact with creamy bokeh.
