p.1 #1Sony A1 became unresponsive. Is this overheating?
I just bought a lightly used A1 that I received on Saturday and on my second night the tracking stopped working. Only a still grey box from its last location that the thumb stick couldn't move. Then menus stopped working. Power off/on didn’t help but removing battery for 2-3 minutes fixed it and I finished the shoot. Shot 1,200 shots the next night no issue. (accidentally shot 4,000 the first night with no issues. Hard to see the indicator and get used to shutter lol)

So is that overheating behavior?

Its on 4.0

Samyang 35-150

512GB Lexar type A. JPEG plus RAW (Same card)

Neewer Battery

first night just jpeg (4,000 shots hi+, no issue, but only JPEG)

second night 1,200 shots. low with RAW+JPEG (unresponsive)

third night 1,000 shots. low RAW+JPEG (no issue)

There's a very obvious question: Was the camera hot?

To have issues due to overheating, it should be obvious that the camera is hot.
I'm not saying you can just feel the body and know definitively whether it's over heating, but you should check if suspecting overheating.

What is your overheat setting? Check user manual / menu. Point being, there is a setting.

The hottest part of the body should be behind the rear display.
Users often lift the rear display away from the body a little for heat management, but that's usually for video work.

p.1 #3Sony A1 became unresponsive. Is this overheating?
I overheated my A1 2 days ago when making many video clips (on and off for ~45 mins I think). It was definitely hot and the screen came up with a message saying it was too hot. I just turned it off so I'm not sure what (if any) controls I would have had. I've done pretty much all stills up to now and never had it overheat (or get as hot as it felt). From your description I kind of doubt it was overheating.

If memory serves, Sony is one of the brands that stores camera temperature(s) inside the EXIF of images. If so, you can check an entire directory for temperatures via the following command:

exiftool -*temp* <directory of out-of-camera image files>

Where would this setting be in the menu? I've never seen nor heard of it. Mine got pretty warm yesterday but I'm in Texas where temp yesterday was around 99 degrees.

It's the Auto Power off Temp setting, though not a lot if info there. I had forgotten about it so I'm changing mine to High
https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2040/v1/en/contents/TP1000422502.html?search=Auto%20Power%20OFF%20Temp

MENU → (Setup) → [Power Setting Option] → [Auto Power OFF Temp.] → desired setting.

Standard:
Sets the standard temperature for the camera to turn off.
High:
Sets the temperature at which the camera turns off to higher than [Standard].

Thank you. I'll have to test it to see what works best. I'm not doing video.

Unlikely - it usually has a message about being too hot and shutting down.

I use mine in 45 degree centigrade heat and it overheats if it is left on even if you're not shooting but you get a message about it overheating and shutting down. I now keep one battery in the fridge and swap it out when things start getting too hot.

You would know it is hot as the whole camera including the grip gets pretty warm.

I would check memory card or the 3rd party battery and lens connection.

In normal temps (25 deg C) I shoot ~20,000 images at 30fps in a couple of 3 - 4 hours with no overheating problems.

I downloaded an A1 raw I found online and confirmed the camera stores two temps:

  1. Ambient Temperature : 17 C
  2. Battery Temperature : 30.6 C

p.1 #10Sony A1 became unresponsive. Is this overheating?
Since I got my used A1 in March, I have had one similar issue where Bluetooth stopped working. After removing the battery for a few seconds, everything came back to normal. It happened after doing some light video (4K / 24p for about 1 hour and using a Bluetooth remote). So, just like a good old PC, the camera software sometimes seems to benefit from a forced reboot. Just turning the camera on and off is not enough; only the removal of the battery for a few seconds seems to do the trick.

It's not the body, it's the lens.
It sometimes happens to me as well, with 3rd party lenses if ever I guess.

Already answered.

With new versions of firmware changing menus so much and without firmware of OP's body stated, I just avoid trying to give menu details.
Only very recently I updated a V1.20 body to V4.00.
During initialisation after V4.00 (and I think V3.00 too) there is a prompt to set the high temp warning.
The lower temp is default.

p.1 #13Sony A1 became unresponsive. Is this overheating?
I had an A1 fail to start recently.
Power up resulted in the usual startup noise from the lens.
Then Tv would be displayed and a couple of other settings before it would shut down and then repeat this cycle.
I had GM600 attached. Power cycle, removing battery fo a couple of minutes no change.
Swap to 400-800 no change.
No problem with either lens on other body.
Got home, fitted 20-70 G. No change.A few more remove battery.
Finally, remove SONY grip and fit single SONY battery in body, all good.
No problems with any above components since.

Sometimes stuff happens that can't be explained.
