I’d like to share a few images I captured of the Harpy Eagle in Colombia. I visited this nest a couple of years ago, and it was one of the most extraordinary places I’ve ever photographed this incredible species. We were able to work at eye level with the nest and from a remarkably close distance, which made for an unforgettable experience.
This year, a new nest has become available with very similar conditions. We'll be able to photograph from just 95 feet (about 29 meters) away—something that is exceptionally rare. Most Harpy Eagle nests are photographed from much greater distances, often with backlit conditions and from the forest floor looking up. That's what makes opportunities like this so special.
Being able to observe and photograph the behavior of these magnificent eagles under these conditions is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'll be visiting this nest with a small group of photographers from September 29 to October 5, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what we'll be able to capture.
