p.1 #1 · High Key Lighthouse in Fog

Looking for feedback on composition and post processing of the below image. Was a foggy day in Maine so I was leaning towards high key processing when capturing the image. I did bump the clarity a bit on the top of the lighthouse as well as the flag to get them to stand out a bit more. Not sure if I should remove the single duck in the water either. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome to FM and to the Critique Forum
I believe your choice of High Key has good bases. The heavy cloud cover and the sea fog are naturally diffusing the light eliminating harsh shadows and dark tones. That makes your image a perfect candidate for High Key.

High Key in photos is mostly an artistic effect. As such they belong to the “personal choice/taste” category, and if you are happy with the results that is all it matters. Any suggestion you are going to get is going to be based on personal taste/preferences. The same is true for composition.

What I see on my monitor is some light blue cast. Unless it is intentional I would try to boost the whites more. The histogram shows no data on the far end of the highlights so you can push further the whites w/o blown the highlights.
If you want to enhance the dreamy, ethereal quality of fog and the mist you may also want to (selectively) lower the clarity adding some glowing effect.
As far as the duck is concerned, it’s so small that looks more like a black spot. My suggestion would be to clone it out if you like to see a “cleaner” water.

The composition is fine. The lighthouse and the house are positioned in the vert 1/3rd and 2/3rd. It works for me. My suggestion would be to crop out some of the bottom IOT position the shoreline close to the bottom 3rd and see if you get a more harmonious feel out of the composition.

I think you did a very good job with this HK photo. There is very little room for improvement. Just follow your vision and show what you want the viewer to see.

+1 a nice one.

+1 on the blue cast. That's not necessarily a problem, but it is a decision. The blue can be a clue to time of day or atmospheric conditions. If that information is part of your desired intent to convey, then it's all good to have it in there. Might even consider going "more blue" to further convey that (explore it a bit).

Conversely, if you take the blue out, the neutral aspect shifts the emotive a bit in that regard, too. Either way, your call. Just depends on the mood of intent you desire to convey.

As to the crop ... again, a decision.

If I look at the implied lines of the lighthouse and reflection, they create a strong vertical. If I crop the bottom (say, right at the duck), then the strength of that vertical is reduced, in comparison to the strength of the horizon. This change in line strength relationship shifts the spatial relationship. One is going to present "looser" spatially, the other "tighter" spatially. So, here again it becomes a decision regarding how you want the viewer to perceive the spatial relationship on what you want them to feel.

Now, going back to the blue ... now coupled with the spatial ... you have a matrix of decisions, regarding what you may want to do with the image. That said, I'm good with it as is in large degree. Any changes you may want to make are going to be based on your understanding of what it is you are desiring to convey to the viewer. And, if that is something you haven't considered strongly before ... then, I'd recommend you play with each (extremes even) to get a feel for how it shifts things.

Here's one thing I've found about good images ... when they can still work well in a variety of ways, you've usually got a good one. Then, it is just a matter of (sometimes easier said, than done) deciding what it is YOU want to CONVEY to your viewer. Kinda like do you wear the red dress or the black one. The miniskirt or the pencil or the long one. Those are decisions of conveyance in the fashion design realm, where they can all be good choices depending on what message you want to send. Our's is similarly inclined toward the message we desire to convey. Answer that, and you give yourself some cues and clues with how to answer your questions.

Personally, I crop below the duck ... about equal distance below the duck, as the duck is below the horizon. Then, the matter of duck / no duck is a choice. Then, the matter of blue / no blue is a choice. But, start with your spatial relationships as they dictate the mood in a way, that your other choices can either harmonize with or juxtapose against, regarding mood you want to convey to your viewer ... tight / loose / relaxed / focused. Imo, this one deserves to be more about relaxing the viewer, rather than tightening their view. But, you can take it whichever direction(s) you desire.

It's a good one ... good job.

Lighthouses are always popular to shoot and make interesting images.

There is never any right or wrong, only the story you want to tell. The way this is presented, it is more about the fog than the lighthouse. If you want it to be more about the lighthouse than fog, you might want to rethink the crop.

To make it more about the lighthouse you can make a vertical crop with plenty of negative space, about 3/4’s of the way to the left between the flag and the house, and a tad more than a third of the water, then off center the lighthouse by about the width of the lighthouse to the right and also leave plenty of negative space (a tad more than you left on the left side of the image) on the right of the lighthouse. I think the flag is a nice focal point and adds to the image. The house is not adding much for me. It is up to you which story you want to tell. Personally I think the story of a lighthouse in the fog is stronger than fog surrounding the lighthouse. Your image, you decide.

I would make it a vertical crop with very light sepia coloring. JMO.

I like the image as presented including the blueish hue and the crop. If you want to tinker with this, consider a slight vignette.

Thank you everyone for the feedback, I'm going to play around more with the crop and exposure/tint a bit to see what I like best. Your ideas/feedback are appreciated.
