Blade Runner-style in Shinjuku, Tokyo--what lens please?

Just wondering if someone did some portrait shots around dusk or nighttime in Shinjuku, Tokyo with the famous neon lights in the background. If so, what lens did you use? Originally I plan to just take my Viltrox 35/1.2 LAB N and A7V. However, my Viltrox occasionally hunts when the subject is in the shade amidst bright background. I might still go for it but since I want the background to be readable, I might as well bring the lighter Sony 40/2.5 G.
If you have any tips and etc. in Japan per-se please let me know. I downloaded the GO app already which I read is their UBER. I'm staying in the Shibuya district and start taking portraits (I've got a model) there before going to Shinjuku for some dusk shots.

I did a night photo tour in Shinjuku/Shibuya and I shot it fully in Sony FE 40G lens. Also did something similar in Sangenjaya back alley at night with a Voigtlander 35mm MF lens. I think 35-40 will cover your need. Maybe with a mist filter too. If you want more emphasis with the subject maybe go up to 50mm, but I feel like tighter than that you'd be struggling to get your context.

I think if you are going in October should be at the tail end of the typhoon risk. I've visited Japan the most in the November timeframe and its been mostly dry. Though the wettest time I've see was mid October...I'll be going again in Nov this year.

Ok I appreciate the weather advice. I am going this mid-October. I love to shoot rain or shine. If it rains, I'll just shoot with my iPhone 17 PM. I also want some shots while we are in the subway like these.

Train photos is like its own genre in Tokyo I feel like. If you have a subject I think it'll be super cool to shoot long-ish exposure in like a medium busy time of the day in places like this...

Ok sounds really interesting. Yes I can have the model walk and since the Godox 1VMidS is quite small I can even do the rear curtain to do the motion blur shots. Apparently the train ride from Shibuya to Shinjuku on the Yamanote line is 8 minutes while the Saikyo-Shinjuku line is only 5 minutes.

Back in topic...i think your 40 will be good if you want a readable background but, honestly, in Tokyo you can use every kind of focal length; what gives you "blade runner" vibes are city lights and rain if you are "lucky".
Have a look at "Shibuya Sakura Stage" too and, for an "old style look", go to "Ebisu Yokocho" street.
No more hints...i don't want to spread too much some nice places...this year in China i saw the "influencers" issue on too many locations.
PS: on my Tokyo trips, i never used "Go" or "taxis", only Metro/Trains and my hurting feet...if you can walk a lot and i never followed a straight path but always took detours when i saw something interesting.

I was just in Japan- I stayed in Shibuya-
I think first and foremost- The most interesting parts are the ones you don't find on a tourist destination map. Just walk- The back alleys in Shibuya are way more interesting then the "must see" Shibuya crossing-
Secondly traveling by train is so easy from Shibuya- Never any need to take a car/cab.
The Tsukiji Fish Market in Ginza is a must-
Also Shallow depth of field is great at night but don't discount all of the beautiful scenery that is present- Like the shallow depth of field shots posted- Blown out backgrounds are what everyone can do with fast lenses.
I love the look of fast lenses for city scapes more than I do for blur-
I think overall- Go explore whats in front of you vs chasing a map- The best experiences always happen around the next turn.
I hate talks without photos so hear are a few from a recent trip. (also af is overreated)

Beautiful images Rus!!! Thanks for sharing! Love them all especially the one with the lady in a bicycle. I'm leaning towards a 35mm but the 50mm looks very appropriate as well.
BTW, I was just in the city of roses----I love it!!! People are friendly and not too many tourists. I plan to come back in a couple of years.

Uber is 100% viable in Tokyo and pretty inexpensive in case the subway is closed. Often local Japanese apps will only be in Japanese. Regarding the subway, download the Suica app and set it up as a transit card in your wallet. You may not be able to load it with Yen until you get to Japan but you'll be using public transit like a local once you do.
I think 40mm is a perfect focal length for your shots - you may even want to use your 35mm, but be prepared to stop down and boost your ISO as "everything" will be "everywhere" and you'll want as much of it in focus otherwise how would anybody know you're in Tokyo?
