Bought the Viltrox 14mm F4 for Z but it has a large hot spot from F8. Shame. Anyone recommend a wider than 18mm on Nikon F or Z for infrared?

My best ultrawide is an 18- the Milvus F-mount has been problem-free down to 950nm. My second best is the 7Artisans 14/2.8, which is good down to 720nm. Have you tried the Viltrox with a filter on the lower end of the spectrum?

Many thanks for those two excellent suggestions - different price points but very promising. I've not tried the Viltrox 14mm at less than 850nm but will give it a go.

I've been shooting IR-sensitive film in crappy plastic cameras with an R72 filter to maximize the dreamy, surreal effects of IR:

Diana 151 with Agfa Aviphot 200 pushed to 1600 to allow handheld shots with the R72 filter.

Holga 120N with the same pushed film. The lens is better on the Holga but the shutter speed is faster so you need very bright conditions for it to work handheld.

I have long wanted a coastal optics 60 mm that is a legendary macro lens for IR and UV and found one- first shot with it out my front door gathering clouds and incoming weather in Tucson It is great on IR, it does UV as well with my full spectrum Z7II but the Z7II is very insensitive to UV so it means significant long exposures with tripod, on IR it is manual "normal" photography and I can swap filters from my Kolari set to dissect the IR spectrum all the way to 1000 nm.

thanks, I am finding all sorts of things to photograph just around my house, that image is just view from my front door. The local cactus and desert plants will keep me busy. I am impressed with its edge/corner sharpness even to 1000 nm. I have used all sorts of lens on the nikon conversion, most I dont like, this one I like.

A couple of things to be aware of.

1. When shooting IR and closeups you may occasionally get a hot spot. It is a known issue that occasionally shooting closeups a hot spot may develop. The use of a hood sometimes mitigates it. I have had very few shots where the hotspot showed but I was warned it my happen. I don't use a hood.

2. Be cautious in extremely cold weather if using it out in extreme cold if when focusing you find stiffness or resistance do not force it. One user mentioned that their coastal optics fell apart. It was likely a manufacturing defect as the vendor replaced the lens. I've used mine in -20 weather with no issues, but there was one day it didn't feel right so I put the lens away. Checked it later on in the warmth and it was fine. Just be cautious in extreme cold.

I used mine mainly on a modified Canon body, though for awhile also used it on Nikon bodies for color which I no longer have. These days it sees its most use on the GX 100 II and occasional on my Full Spectrum Canon R5.

The sweespot of the lens is F5.6

All good points might not be the lens for winter seasons, or arctic travel. I shot IR once in Svalbard before going to the north pole, this was winter and march, and I was not wowed with IR for that purpose. The desert in Arizona on the other hand is made for IR. I quickly figured out it is best at 5.6 and 8, 4 is not it and 45 that it is capable of is just plain stupid, actually not happy with 16 and above and 11 is not it either. It does vary a little how the IR is cut 720 is more forgiving than 1000 nm, 1000+ nm is a bit more demanding it seems to get exposure right. I'll try a hood I probably have every size someplace in a box and see what I think. I have shot IR for a very long time, the edge to edge on this lens is something. Being apo and no focus shift I like the idea I can center it at one cutoff and swap the filters and still be there. Not the case with something like a Nikon ED which is decent at IR.I think a field trip to Saguaro National Park is to be on the agenda. I am going to have to put it my telescope mount and do some astro wide field IR stack maybe 30 min of images and see what I get.
