Below are 3 pics of the extreme edges of a Sony 35 F2.8 lens. Cosmetically, the lens looks new, and looking at the glass, you don't really see it.

Thoughts??

That looks like one type of fungus. It looks like that or develops “webs.”

The good news is if you have it disassembled and cleaned, there’s likely no, or not enough damage to affect performance. The bad news is that might cost more than the lens is worth.

Oh, and fungus is contagious, so do not store that lens with any other camera gear!

I had a lens with it years ago. As others have said it looked more like a spider's web or snowflake. I don't believe that is it.

There appears to be leans wipe/cleaning residue around it, so whatever it is it appears he's tried to clean it away and was unsuccessful, implying it's on the inside of the element.

I've a lens that has this (at the edges of the elements), but my lens is 70 years old. I don't think its fungus because for my lens, it is clear when i look through it, but at an angle these marks appear - which tells me it is either cleaning residue (which wouldn't be the case for that 35mm lens if the lens was never cleaned) or maybe some sort of delamination or separation (which i think is the case for my lens and may be the case for that 35mm lens). It could also be some lubricant degassing. While the 35mm lens might not be too old, factors such as hot weather might result in degassing or separation. Might want to see a cross section of the lens to have an idea of which elements are affected if they are single lens groups rather than e.g. doublets, it wouldn't be separation either.

I had a lens with fungus that looked just like that.
Using the Chat GPT information, they are seed points.
I just called them spots. I had many more, maybe 20 spots when I first noticed.
It was my Voigtlander APO 50, which was probably fortunate as simple to work on.
(Repair shop did it, simple meant low cost)

Maybe ChatGPT is contradicting itself, seed points lead to radiating patterns. Possible you'll see radiating patterns later.

p.1 #14Is this fungus??
Here's a fun experiment: type "is this lens fungus?" into google, and browse through some reddit threads and/or threads on other forums. What you will see is that, basically without exception, every single thread has a number of people who will call anything fungus, even when it is clearly not fungus. If you post a picture of a lens on the internet, some percentage of people are invariably going to tell you you have fungus.

I highly, highly, *highly* doubt that what you've posted is fungus, and I'm confident that if you take a light to any other lens you own, you'll be able to find some other "questionable" spots that in reality are just dust, or grime, or delamination, or a little lens cement, or just a weird spot from when you sneezed without fully covering your mouth while you were swapping lenses.

Rest easy.
