When one has a f1.2 lens, the usual thing to do is stop it down all the way. Later we check our results and see various issues - such as the wide expanse of blurry hair, or the sharp strand of an in focus tress next to a blurred strand of hair. When the background is far away we don't need f1.2, but yes, I would have done the same as you.
When you go out for a first date you aren't rational and so I was when going out with the 85, back in time I happened to take a series of shots of people, I was working on my boat which was off the ground, you know, sandpaper, varnish bla bla bla so I was by a higher point of view and these people were approaching me to pass the usual comments and I had the camera handy, by being high up they had to raise the head and behind them just the pavement, I learned that f2.8-f3.2 was the sweet spot for such shots, of course when I switched to a f1.4 85mil I wanted to open up but, again, learned that depending on background, background distance, angle of the subject vs camera bla bla bla the aperture has a bigger than I thought impact and that many a times there's no absolute need to shoot wide open but, hey, ego sometimes is bigger than the aperture ;-)
