I think the best 35 for Sony is the 1.4 GM, followed by the Viltrox LAB. The Viltrox 35 EVO is smaller and excellent optically.
However like you, I often find 35 frequently too short or too long. As such, and specifically for travel, I have gone to small 26mm Viltrox EVO and 50mm Viltrox AIR. Combined they take up less space than either the GM or LAB, and combined weigh about what the 35 EVO weighs.

For me, 35mm often feels marginally too short. Yet indoors, where space is constrained and the next photographic position cannot be anticipated or controlled, a 50mm lens can become too narrow and compositionally restrictive.
Considering total optical performance, easy to use, fun to use, and the more elusive question of photographic pleasure of the big other, which 35mm lens would you choose?

I'll piggy back on this---I hope I don't hijack this thread but I think I am still on point. Travelling to Tokyo in October and I'm prepared to go with just one lens---Viltrox 35/1.2 LAB N and my A7V with the vertical grip. I'll take the Godox 1VMidS as well. Golden hour. Then model threw me a curve, she wants some heads shots too (although the samples she sent me are all heads and shoulders and half-body shots, not tight portraits). At first I said shoot---I might be forced to bring my Batis 85/1.8 which would make my bag heavier. However after I've seen shots with my Viltrox, I can just crop it. With any 35mm though, you can't really be too close to the subject otherwise the face will be distorted. I know I can fix that on DxOViewPoint 5 but I rather not.

I believe the photoncollector would be best served by a general purpose, high performance lens that can do an acceptable job of most or all challenges; I was looking for the *main need* but yes, travel is many things to many people.
I think of it as the mix you see in your home community, but with different geography. Then, throw in your way of seeing and your particular appreciation of image characteristics, contrast levels, saturation, sharpness. It's messy by its nature, resistant to much analysis.
And this is why the balance of purposive genres of photography is so important to 'travel photography'. Do you want super sharp everything for landscapes / architecture /statues and also pretty good people and street work? Questions you ask yourself really help here. I scope out my trips this way, I like the challenge, masochist that I am.
(BTW, these discussions have a good way of hitting on off-topic gems, and Fred doesn't intervene and/or understands their value, so no need to apologise for contributing.)

I was trying to fish for your kind of image preference. As it turns out, we see this fine lass image above, so on portraiture, my TLDR is this: the V35 LAB is best for most members doing a lot of 35mm shooting, certainly of people. It's not my kind of lens to carry/use, but for most E-mount shooters, it makes the best people images among the crowded fast 35mm field.
Below, from Dustin Abbott's review site, are a pair of self-portraits shot with the GM 35/1.4 and the V35/1.2 LAB. There are too many advantages to the Viltrox image shown in this simple comparo to explain here. Some will see it, to others they will look pretty much the same.

You've put together a very good list of contenders, they each have their personality. None will disappoint when used inside their 'comfort envelopes' and use case mixes. My one, and bear in mind I don't much like the 35mm focal length, but I needed a bridge lens from 28mm to 50mm, is Thypoch's Simera 35/1.4. It's a derivative of a Leica M Summilux, but using Chinese glass - they are part of DZO (DongZheng Optical Technology). Their home city of Shenzhen is a kind of Optical Silicon Valley.
I want light, small, fast, a balance of character and technical in bokeh, limited special glass, kindness to skin, great image depth and color. Broad competence, too.

I’ve only used the Sony 35mm f/1.8, Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM, and Sigma 35mm f/1.2 Art (Mark I).
The Sony 35mm f/1.8 is underrated. It's a bit boring and renders somewhat flat images, but it has virtually no focus breathing. If you are a hybrid shooter, this is best lens.
The 35mm f/1.4 GM has the best clarity, contrast, and overall punch. AF is rapid fire.
The Sigma 35mm f/1.2 Art is the one that really pulls at your heartstrings. The rendering has a special character that's hard to describe. Its only real weaknesses are CA and purple fringing when shot wide open. Mark II have improved on it and so did Viltrox 35mm F1.2

Very nice samples there Philip!! I shot again with my Viltrox 35/1.2 LAB N yesterday and continued to be pleased with the results. One drawback (well aside from the weight) is the AF performance---it would occasionally 'hunt' when the subject is in a dark shade and the background is very bright. Overall, I'll rate it as a 9/10. You mentioned the 35/1.4 GM, I don't have that lens but I do have the 135/1.8 GM which to me is a 10/10 in AF. So I do understand that the 35GM is the top pick here! Having said that I wouldn't trade my Viltrox 35/1.2 for that and in the same token I wouldn't trade my 135GM for a Sigma 135/1.4 either. OTOH, if I would shoot a long boarder jumping in a skating park, the 35GM would be my choice.
The OP hasn't indicated whether they would use the 35mm lens for landscape/architecture, product, environmental portraiture or travel. In my case, if I really have to travel light---I'll look into other options. However, for environmental portraits I am happy with the Viltrox 35 whether it's masquerading as a 24mm

I’m back. 35mm is still too wide for shooting street photography on the go from a Mercedes-Benz GLA 250, especially through the windshield. It’s great when you’re out walking the streets, but not so much when you’re zooming through the scenes.

Are there anyone switched from GM to Sigma 35 1.2DNII.
Only usage is portraits, size difference doesn't matter. I have GM since I sold my old 35 1.2, because the preference was all-rounder but it's not case anymore. I only care about portrait rendering. I had 50 1.2GM which I loved for rendering but prefer 35mm because I can stay closer to my kids and better for indoor.
