I’ve found this Smallrig alternative to be far superior and has USB-C charging. I’ve been very pleased with it. Maybe worth trying it out. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1892054-REG/smallrig_5207_sr_rg2_wireless_remote_controller.html

I just tested it on the A7RVI and no issues autofocusing and/or releasing shutter. Connected right away when pairing, and reconnected right away after turning camera and remote on and off again. I like the tactile feel of the shutter button on the Smallrig remote better than the Sony remotes I've used. It has a better half-press feel, and full press feel. Plus it has status lights that let you know at a quick glance if it's connected (lights automatically go off after a couple of seconds), plus you can upgrade firmware to the device via the Smallrig Up app.

I’m not a fan of wired remotes for many of the reasons you and Dan are discussing. They seem clunky, get in the way, and put unnecessary wear and tear on the port. I’ve been using Sony Bluetooth remotes like the RMT-P1BT Wireless Remote Commander and some JJC cheaper ones but they have been unreliable. They lose Bluetooth connection, and on the Sony the battery compartment is poorly made and battery often loses connection between battery and terminals, not to mention it uses a disposable lithium battery to begin with.
