p.1 #1Repair costs?
I had the unfortunate event of someone swapping their non working Sony 24 GM for mine. They messaged me on Facebook asking to buy my kens. I drove out to meet them and when I met them they were acting shady. Long story short they took my lens and swapped the lenses under his back pack without me noticing. He hadned me back his non working kens and told me he was going to grab the cash from the atm and stopped responding to me. At first when I got to my car I was mad that the guy left me waiting for 15 minutes. When I took a closer look at the lens I noticed the front element was scratched and my lens didn't have a scratched front element. That when I knew it had been swapped and when I got home and placed it on my camera what do you know no aperture reading or af/mf motor response. Took the back plate off and already there's metal pieces missing in the back. My question is does anyone have an estimate for what it would cost to fix this or should I cut my losses and sell it off for parts.

I’m so sorry that happened to you, it’s disgusting that someone would go to this length to rip you off! It sounds like that lens has serious multiple issues and with a good used copy from a reputable FM member selling for $679 currently I can’t imagine the repair costs will be worth it.

I've sold and met people and this was the first time in my life that I had a gut feeling this guy was shady. Learned a hard lesson today and will probably just cut my losses and sell it off for parts. One issue is definitely the contacts from the lens to camera. I have a second copy of the kens and switched them out and on my working copy the lens was also not making contact with the camera. Unfortunately when I put the working contacts in the bin working lens and it still didn't work.

Thanks for the response!

Assuming he left the S/N on the lens, you might consider filing a police report and they would have the legal authority to track the S/N down to the original owner (ie, they could contact Sony dealers and service centers and compel them to share any ownership records for that S/N). Even if the printed S/N was removed it might be encoded in the EEPROM and available in the EXIF of images (don't recall if Sony includes lens S/N in their EXIF).

You also might do an online EXIF search for the lens S/N as well.

I realize this a long shot but wanted to present it just in case.

A quick check at Precision Camera indicates that labor + shipping would total $561. Parts would be additional, and they'll tell you the parts cost once they know what parts are needed.

I appreciate it but I don't have the exact serial number and never used the lens for personal images but great advice for the future.

Thank you! I was hoping less than that but alas it is what it is. I'll cut my losses short and sell this lens for parts.

I am sorry to hear about your recent bad experience. That reinforces my point about dealing with folks on FM or through FM pretty much all the time.

It's my second bad deal in 7byears if meeting people. My experience is if there's a gut feeling about something about to go bad trust your instincts and back out. Thank you for your sympathy.

@snapsy means the serial number of the lens you have. Use it to trace the lens back to the person who purchased it; the person that stole your lens.

Understood him. I have 4 copies of the lens and the one that was stolen wasn't the one I mainly used.
