p.1 #1 · Fuji AF improvement

As you know, I have been critical of Fuji AF-S for some time now. But I do have to acknowledge an improvement. One that concerns AF-C and might also impact the focus consistency issue in AF-S. It seems to have no impact on the focus beyond infinity problem, though.

What happened?

Well, I have been trying to configure my X-E3 with the 27f2.8 as point and shoot. P mode and AF-C, 4FPS. Plain and simple. What I noticed was that AF-C was terribly hunting on a target (even if I didn't move the camera at all) in low light and on subjects with not so perfect contrast. It was firm and steady on other well lit and contrasty subjects, though.

Compared it to my RX1R Mk3 in AF-C and the focus wouldn't move at all once I trained it on a subject. No matter the lighting or the contrast.

Then for good measure I took my X-E5 with the 27f2.8 and was surprised! Just like the Sony, the X-E5 in AF-C did not hunt. It did not move focus back and forth in tiny steps on subject with low contrast or low light! Same with the 16mmf2.8. Wow. Since I never used AF-C so far, I missed this major improvement in AF performance.

Will do more testing but must admit I am pretty impressed.
