Oppenheimer was mostly shot on film, but Odyssey worked to overcome many challenges of shooting film vs digital. The Odyssey is the first 100% film IMAX project. The IMAX film format contains an equivalent of 18K digital resolution, plus amazing dynamic range and the organic feel of film vs digital. The equipment generates a great deal of audio noise which makes dialogue a real challenge. The equipment and film stock make production very expensive. The Odyssey is a very long poem, probably created in the Bronze Age, 1200-1700BC and written down sometime in the 6th to 8th century BC. It tells the story of an ill fated king trying to return home from the Trojan war(s). If you haven’t experienced IMAX, this might be worth the long drive. Of course, this could be a totally horrible production, but Christopher Nolan has an amazing track record.. and yes, Oppenheimer is well worth watching via a BluRay 4K player. The amount of detail in this film along with Nolan’s other works like 1917 are stunning on a great TV via very high bit-rate 4K BluRay. It is one of a couple of dozen amazing direct to 4K movies that are worth the cost of the material and seeing that it was derived from IMAX, his movies really shine at home in a way that they don’t present themselves via streaming.

Long was watching the special theatric release of LotR in 2012 which was all three films (extended cut), back-to-back. By the end I was ready to throw myself into Mt Doom after Gollum! Just kidding, but I was seriously detached from reality on leaving the theater.

I just picked up the restored versions of Spartacus and Lawrence of Arabia and both had intermissions. Very high bit rate, almost 100mbps and the picture is amazing. Both of these were early 70mm productions. Even the sound track was addressed. Considering that Odyssey covers a ten year period and that the story is pretty involved, what it truly remarkable is that the story was passed on by word of mouth for hundreds of years prior to being recorded in writing. This is much like the Vedas, but likely older.

That reminds me of watching The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for the first time in a movie theater a couple of years ago.
I remember watching it - or trying to - in England on tv back when I was a kid. But for some reason I only remembered about half the movie!
Then after leaving the theater atter that three hour spectacle with a sore a$$ and wondering what day it was .... I remembered why - I always gave up on it as it was soo freakin long!

My dad told me that you really needed to see Laurence in the movie theater (or “movie palace” as he would call it) to really get the scale of both the production and the intensity of the colors.
I don’t go to the cinema often anymore but I will definitely see the Odyssey in IMAX.

Note that IMAX is impressive, but there are a few IMAX 70mm Film theaters which use film and project an image with at least four times the resolution of the standard digital IMAX location.

I'm truly excited to see the Odyssey, though we most likely won't see it in IMAX due to limited cinemas with that capability (plus one that isn't run down). Adam Savage did a really great video on the filming, development, and scanning process of the film for the movie.

The digital projection is more convenient for me but the Palms has a 70mm film projector and I may see it again if I feel like I missed something from the digital screening.
