BTW, Nolan didn't direct 1917, that was Sam Mendes. He directed DUNKIRK.

Saw this yesterday, it was cool. Not my favorite of his, but the last 45 minutes or so are a delight.

Thanks for the correction.. I haven’t been into movies for years, but recently started putting my 4K videos on NAS.. many of which I had never watched. So, catching up. Just watched the restored 4K 2001: a space odyssey. Wow, great restoration and amazing prediction of the future, even though timing a good bit off. What is timely is the consideration given to A.I.

Recently watched a mint 70mm print of it. Phenomenal film. It must have blown minds in '68.

Unfortunately the DMV area has no 70mm showings. And I think there's just 1-2 more weeks of IMAX showings. Hopefully they add more.

I will be honest - I will most likely wait to stream this movie on my standard 65" flatscreen TV at home. I haven't been to a movie theater for many years now. I liked the Oppenheimer movie but also streamed it years after it first came out in the theaters. I haven't touched a DVD for many years either.

I can say the same, except I recently revived my 4K BluRay player and uploaded most of my BluRays to my NAS. Many, perhaps most movies were never shot, nor preserved in a way to reflect anything but budget constraints, but the ones that were cared for from production to final Bluray can really be spectacular. This includes many Criterion Edition movies that have painstakingly been recovered. Most streaming services, such as Netflix and prime transmit with data rates are around 15-20mbps, whereas the best, like Apple can be 25-30mbps. The best BluRay 4K HDR push 100mbps and what you see is far fewer artifacts and much better shadow tones. Again, only the better transfers are really worth the effort and cost of going the BluRay route vs streaming. Most of the 4K movies use an upscaled 2K intermediary, but some use direct to 4K and especially the 65-70mm film transfers can be stunning.

I think this is much like our reliance upon online posting and viewing on our devices. Many of us have forgotten what a fine print looks like and our new measure of excellence is based upon viewing images on monitors, sometime as small as our smartphones. With little demand for top quality video/film productions, I wonder if a decade from now there will be any demand/budget for future Oppenheimer/Odyssey/2001 Space Odyssey/Ben Hur/Spartacus/Casablanca/Citizen Kane…etc. Unfortunately, some of these 4K renditions are best recoverable due to the original being lost, or damaged.. a good example of this is Citizen Kane..

I honestly had no idea that BluRay still exists. I don't think Sony is selling recorders/players with this technology anymore since it did not make it vs DVD player technology.

You can still purchase the player, but they are a bit expensive and new optical discs are still being manufactured. Generally, DVD will get you 720..BluRay ..1080 and BluRay 4K is 4K..(usually HDR) resolution. Even the 1080 standard BluRay can be quite good. You can also purchase drives intended for use with computers and these are the ones used for ripping content to a hard drive/NAS. The cost of this drive and software is minimal.

The lack of demand for high quality video at home might just keep movie theaters in business. I think the majority have acclimated to calling streaming “high quality” if it just is lableled 4K HDR. This is much like smartphone images set the public’s quality standard for still and video.

I was somewhat confused in 1968 as many were, but it definitely boggled my young brain. I didn't care about the film prints back then. After seeing it on TV later I read the book and that was different but more comprehensive.

Go to the Amazon and you will see plenty of BlueRay players and movies, yet many discs are NOS.

What blows my mind is Kubrick began filming it in late '65, and many of the sets like the pod bay were already built by 1966.

This is the most live-in-LA flex ever.
I still haven't been to the Vista though.

I live very close, so I go to the Vista semi-regularly. It's a nice theater, but it sucks to wait in line, especially in the heat. There's also a very active pigeon coup on the building, so they're flying about while you wait on-line. Terrible, lol.

People in Halifax, Nova Scotia, have IMAX 70mm, too.

Do you have a functioning Vista Vision projector? (smug look).

Seriously though, I love that they are maintaining these things in a city of 500k. Maybe it's actually more likely in regions that no longer have AMC Theater's monopoly.
