Elizabeth Fry was an English prison reformer, social reformer and philanthropist. She was instrumental in the Gaols Act 1823, which mandated sex-segregation of prisons and female warders for female inmates to protect them from sexual exploitation. She also worked to get death sentences commuted to deportation to Australia.
For her work in reforming prisons, she was also called "The Angel of Prisons", and Bank of England honored her with her portrait on £5 note.
