Ok, it did on my 80D and G1X3 but others? DoNo
Ah, very nice. I thought it was only working on the high end, R6/2 not being it, but it also works on 80D and G1X? Well I can't get the compass on any of my cameras, R6/2, R10, R50, 6D, 200D... Sigh. Typical Canon being feature short

I don't recall anything special about the 5D III color, but I tended to the use the 1Ds III at low ISO back then.
The 1DX was better for retaining a level of decent color quality at higher ISOs than the other old-school Canons prior to the 2016 sensors.
I had never considered the EVF for viewing settings, but I was able to eliminate the readers for constantly checking sharpness on the rear LCD.

I'm not sure there was anything special about 5DIII/1DX colors from that time but it was easy to get a nice looking image (skin tones) and Adobe's profiles that emulated Canon's for those cameras, were not annoying. I think it was around 2016 when for a while Adobe didn't release profiles for new Canon cameras that emulated Canon's own color/picture styles and we were stuck with Adobe's own profiles that were kind of bland in comparison. From what I remember, it took more tweaking.

Just tried it on the R5 and G, but don't have any DSLRs any more. The R5 gets position just fine but doesn't seem to have direction info. The embarrassing thing is the GP-E2 doesn't seem to work with the G1X3 at all. I could'a sworn. Maybe it was an older G Now it only wants GPS data from a smart phone.
Sorry if I've mislead. Maybe I'm remembering the 5D4 with its built-in GPS that could also give direction information. ??

I always used DPP in those days and sometimes PP with the Noisy Ninja or Neat Images. From what I recalled the high ISO color noise of the 5D III was so bad that when you cleared it up there was not much usable color left. Of course it's no propblem for modern AI NR now, but the the 5D IV was naturally much better at high ISO for noise.

That's a good question - I have a friend with 5D4 to ask. Nevertheless, 6D with built-in GPS does not give direction. Canon feature trickle at its best.

Well, I have to apologize again. I looked at GPS data for all the cameras in my Lightroom library and none of the Canons had direction info. 5D4, 6D, 6D2. All of the various iPhones did. The iPhones only express ordinal points.
I doubt there is any compass in the 5D IV. Direction is just the relative sequential position of the GPS coordinates perhaps a running average or something like that.
I had this same thought process / realization. I had the 5DSR, a whole bunch of EF lenses, and planned to slowly migrate to RF as used versions popped up. The R5 with adapter arrived first (thankfully), so I hadn't parted with too many lenses. I ended up selling the 5DSR, immediately regretted it, and picked up another one shortly after.
It's hard to describe as the R5 is definitely technically better almost across the board (except battery life), but the images out of the 5DSR are just special. Never could have imaged that the R5 would be the backup camera to my 5D... ha. I won't be making the same mistake again!

No problem, I guess your unconscious wishes became true in your memory. Yea, I'd wish to have the direction too.
