So little discussion regarding this lens. I see this as one lens that provides an extreme challenge to the way I shoot.

Is it ignored because it is expensive, or heavy, or both? Perhaps it is ignored because it isn’t another replacement for a traditional lens. What can a fast, high quality zoom in this focal range do that other lenses can’t? For me, I’m hoping that it completely changes how I shoot and the way I view the subjects that I shoot.

I thank Tim Devine for showing me that this lens isn’t just another portrait lens.

Looks great for near sports. Does anyone see potential outside of sports and portraiture?

If it took TC's, it would be a lot more popular since it is competing with 70/200's

True, that would make it more popular. From my perspective, it’s the 2.0 vs 2.8 that makes this lens special.

I do a lot of event photography (concerts). 95% of all images I shoot are in the range of 50-150mm. Presently I use a set of fixed focal lenses between 50 and 135mm.

This lens could easily replace 50-75-100-135 with an added bonus of some more reach.

Couple more threads ...
I like it conceptually but probably too big and heavy for me... I might borrow it from Sony Pro to find out though ... dammit!

I've thought about selling my 70-200, extender and 135 to get the 50-150. It does kind of suck that it doesn't take teleconverters and even though I haven't heard of any issues there's no OSS. If Sony made a 300mm F4 I'd probably jump at the combo. I still think the 50-150 would be a great portrait lens, especially when I have to travel for shoots. I've seen rumors about a wide 2.0 zoom. That would be an amazing travel combo.

Well, even if it takes TCs you end up with a 1.5Kg, $4600 70-210 f/2.8 with no OSS... sounds terrible tbh.

50-150 is too expensive a lens if you dont use it at mostly at f/2.

I think of this lens as a 135GM that can zoom

If it is ignored, the reasons can be different for different people.
What immediately offends me in this lens is that it is white and has the (questionable in a lens that weighs 47.3 oz/1,340 g) tripod leg&collar assembly. Both features suggest that the lens is intended for some niche special use, yet it is not clear what this use might be - not travel or street photography, for sure. It looks like an expensive toy that a lens collector might add for the sake of owning it, but wouldn't use much.

I love this lens. It’s my most used lens for event photography. I use it for sports portraits, action shots, environmental shots, etc. I love the range and the AF paired with an a7r6 is amazing. Do I wish it were a tad smaller. Yea. But it doesn’t bother me that much. Never had a problem with a “shaky” shot with no OSS. Only thing is that this replaces my 50mm and 135mm. But there is a noticeable difference at 50 f2.0? And my 50 f1.2. So I do swap to the 1.2 for some occasions. All in all it’s an amazing lens and I would buy it again.

I agree with you about the white color and find such to be annoying. I've mostly solved the problem by installing black neoprene covers on this lens, my 70-200mm f2.8 II and telephoto lenses.

I purchased the 50-150mm f2 lens, not sure about how I would use it (and, feeling a little crazy for spending so much money on it). As it turns out, I absolutely love this lens! It is great for general walk-around, events, portraits, low-light sports, etc. The outstanding sharpness/contrast rendered, in addition to subject separation make this a really special lens, IMHO. I'm really glad I acquired it. After using it, I sold my Tamron 35-150mm, but will keep the 70-200mm - at least for a while, as it is lighter and more compact for travel.

It seems to me the obvious uses for the lens includes sports (I shoot basketball sometimes and it would be great for that, probably volleyball too and several other indoor sports) and portraits. You could probably use it for other things, but those big categories it would likely shine.

I'm not sure it needs a tripod ring, and I think basically all Sony tripod rings and feet suck but I'm not sure having one is a terrible problem either and I have never cared one way or the other about whether lenses are white or black or silver.

It is a unique lens for Sony and in that way it does show what they can do with lens design. I am sure some people love it.

I used to have this lens for the short period of time together with Sony GM 28-70/2.During that time did my best to find what their potential applications could be in my style of photography and what they can offer that was not available with other lenses.Sadly I did not find anything extra to keep them. And yes, they are fast and sharp wide open. They separate objects like any other zooms that I have, but I realized again, that for subject separation and utmost sharpness/contrast I prefer primes, while my zooms still do their job just right. Also lack of 24mm in GM 28-70/2 and 160-200mm in GM 50-150/2 paired with their relative heavy weight only augmented my unwilingness.Maybe if I were photographing people and action/sports my attitude would have been different.

BTW: I like white paint of tele lenses/zooms.Probably because from the very beginning back in the film times it meant high optical quality.Sticking camouflage covers on the lens to hide its whiteness is high treason for me
