Rufous is an amazing little bird, weighing about the same as a 5 cent nickel it flies round trip from Mexico to Alaska each year and at this time of year these little birds are nesting in Alaska where each year we make an effort to see them. Today we were at the banding today that is used track the birds, they are captured, by licensed and trained people who keep the birds safe, they get a band and a mark on their head with washable paint that fades by the time the leave Alaska to identify which birds are banded, Photos show a bird being held and released after banding, and one near a feeder that is not (yet) banded.
