Is there a straightforward remote (ideally with lock) that plugs into the a7RVI with a short cable like 1m? It seems they want you to use a smartphone and app, which is totally impractical for my purposes. Thanks.

I have read that you can use a USB-C cable remote in one of the ports on side of camera. They are cheap on Amazon, I’m going to try one:
It works great. I leave Bluetooth setting in the camera always on, so it's just a matter of turning on the remote to have it auto-connect and work almost immediately.

The 2nd one is USB-C, but the first one looks like that Multi Terminal connector that Sony had on the a7rV and older cameras. The a7rVI has two USB-C ports unfortunately.
I use the Sony Sony RMT-P1BT Bluetooth remote with my A7R-V. It works flawlessly, but I see it has been replaced with the RMT-VP2 that has added functionality for lens control (which I don't need). I also have the Sony RM-SPR1, which is wired and connects to the USB-C port. It too works perfectly, but the Bluetooth version is a LOT more convenient, especially when L-plates make access to the ports difficult.

The first one also terminates in USB-C. If you look closer you can see there is a 2nd cord as an extension when needed, which fits in between the remote shutter pad and the USB-C termination. 2.3ft for the standard USb-C cable and the extension if needed adds 4.3ft. The shutter also has a hold function which you are looking for.
RMT-VP2 is the new Sony wireless remote control
It's a bit smaller then the RMT-P1BT and has a much longer reach. Works flawless.
To safe the battery put it on LOCK if not in use.
